Anti-gay group to protest at Marine's funeral
Group claims war dead are God's judgment of sinful America

About a dozen members of a Topeka, Kan., church plan to protest at Sunday's funeral for Marine Cpl. Cory L. Palmer, who died of wounds when his Humvee was hit by explosives near Fallujah in Iraq.

The group from Westboro Baptist Church, which takes an aggressive anti-homosexual stance, claims that American war dead are God's revenge on the country for straying from God's law.

Shirley Phelps-Roper, a member of the church and its attorney, said the protest in Seaford is one of several the church is staging around the country this weekend to get its message out.

"We have given God the finger," she said. "Now we are suffering God's wrath."

The group has protested at military funerals across the country and done so in Delaware twice -- once outside Dover Air Force Base and once outside Legislative Hall. Delaware State Police said both protests were peaceful.

Seaford Town Manager Dolores Slatcher said the group has filed the paperwork and will be allowed to protest. She said town and state police are discussing security for the funeral and protesters.

The protest is scheduled for 2:15 p.m., about 45 minutes before Palmer's funeral services at St. John's United Methodist Church. For now, Slatcher said, the protest site is several blocks away from the church.

"It's their right," she said. "But we wish they would respect the rights of the family that is suffering."

Local officials agree.

"I think we should turn a platoon of Marines -- armed U.S. Marines -- loose on them," said Sen. James Vaughn, D-Clayton, himself a World War II Marine veteran. "That would take care of things in a hurry. It's really upsetting. I don't think a grieving family should have to put up with that."

Vaughn's Senate Judiciary Committee is considering House Bill 371, which would set up a 500-foot, protest-free buffer zone around any military funeral.

So far, there is no sign that a group of motorcyclists dedicated to shielding families from the Westboro protesters at military funerals plans to do so at Sunday's funeral in Seaford.

The Patriot Guard Riders have a Delaware chapter. Its state captain, Corey Targett, could not be reached Wednesday.

Rest In Peace

This is as bad as when these same morons from the Westboro Baptist Church demonstrated at a soldier's funeral in IN. It's bad enough that they showed up at all, but they dragged Old Glory on the deck, held signs claiming that God hates America, and the final kicker, shouted insults at the surviving family.

Our country has lost its sense of shame...

Perhaps this group ought to go over to the middle east, and parts surrounding, where homosexual behavior has been going on for hundreds of years and protest. Go global, Westboro Baptist Church, and protest in another country. What in the world do you think would become of them if they did?

I'd pay good money to see that!:bunny:

If they really are going to make a bill, it should be way more than 500 feet.

"I think we should turn a platoon of Marines -- armed U.S. Marines -- loose on them," said Sen. James Vaughn, D-Clayton, himself a World War II Marine veteran.

Going global in protest?
I don't think this group from has the gumption to expand their protests onto foreign soil. The United States of America is their "safe haven" for protest. Can you just imagine what would happen to this group if they they conducted their protest at the funeral site of a Royal Marine and took down the Union Jack a stomped and burned it just because their is a gay community in London? Hmmmmmmm, I wonder. They could even go over the the middle east and parts surrounding where homosexual behavior has been reportly been going on since biblical times. Hey, they could even go over there and burn an Iraqi flag in the middle of Baghdad to protest all the men dancing with men in the open market place.
Westboro Baptist Church, listen up! Homosexuality is global and not just exclusive to these United States. Make your protest global. If you don't want to cross oceans just go right down the road to Mexico City, and burn and stomp their National Flag. Good luck.

Hey Westboro Baptist Church....I dare you to go to Turkey and burn a Turkish flag.....I dare you!! You better be strapped because you'll have thousands of enraged Turks coming at you and they will cut you in little pieces and feed you to their dogs.

i was just at the funeral of a fellow Marine a week ago, and there were patriotguard riders their protecting the family from these morons. luckily there were no protesters there but these people (and i use that word loosely) need to realize what they are doing to the families of our fallen brothers and sisters. but listen up Marines, we are fighting for their right of freedom of speech, so we must be doing a damn good job.

This group files for permits to protest every single funeral they can find ....they *rarely* show up anymore...
They've come to realize that the Patriot Guard will show up motorcycles, and chase cars at least 100 strong...and block any of their attempts to harrass the familly of the of fallen heroes! We'll be there....never fear!

we had a service for a Army Spec 4 here in Sapulpa and the Church (if you can call them that) showed up to do there thing and there is a law but it allowed to protest 1 hour before and 1 hour after but they are required to be 300 ft. I think it sould be that they have to be in a different country and only protest for 1 min.
They are the pigs of the earth and will not get into heaven they will be serving hot water in hell if i have any say.

Governor Vilsack here in Iowa signed a bill just in time that prevented those dirtbags from showing up and coming within I believe 300 feet. Lucky he did because the very day after a Nationals Guardsmen was laid to rest and and those scumbags showed up. Lucky for the family the Patriot riders were there also to prevent those turds from disrupting the funeral.

Sgt. Tony, the State Representative that introduced the legislation trying to put restrictions on the protesters also had to deal with them. They showed up at his church in Del City and protested there, saying he was just trying to further the gay movement.

Why is it that the "anti-gay" ones are protesting too? First it was the ones against the war, then it was the ones that feel that God is punishing us.... Guess there are a lot of people out there against us... Yet we go to Iraq and fight so that they can be over here doing such things. I don't get it... Ahhh... And "free"dom isn't really free because troops are dieing all the time out in Iraq and Afghanistan... if it were'nt for them out there then we'd things would be so different over here in the states...

A lot of folks around here would take matters in their on hands....and put those so called.... WHAT EVER THEY ARE........in their rightfull place......I would think a few would have a dental bill....and some skinned noses.....

THIS IS SO SHAMEFULL.......and I just wonder.....have these people ever served their country....other than to bring shame....and disgrace...on themselves...

May these people rot in hell…

Jenn,
What I don’t get is how the pot can be calling the kettle black. The reason’s the WBC, (Would Be Christians)* are giving for their protests are pathetic. They are drama queens to the max and corrupt the ideals of the youth. They use crude and derogatory references toward the United States of America and our honor towards our loved ones. Now that isn’t right! And it’s not a RIGHT I would defend. Neither in the halls of our Savior or on in the courtrooms of our nation could their actions be considered honorable.

Hrs, you are correct Sir. And in my opinion it is they, who should be arrested. Behind bars where we can see them for what they really are, dangerous dreamers. No one deserves their BS.

I know who these people are. They have a website called "Godhatesfags.com." The devil is in the details. It is one family - one family of "lawyers." Do anything not legal, and they sue. It is not about anything Christian. They are money-grubbing w-hores.

Like I said - I know who these people are. Have had dealings with them in the past. They need a kick in the @ss - just make sure your assets are protected. Mine are.

I was at Cory's funeral last Sunday. The photo's are at www.oohrah.net & linked on the opening page with a burning candle beside Cory Palmer's name.

There were app. 600+ motorcycles & app. 1,000 bikers there. They lined the streets with flags. It takes a lot to impress this old Marine, but the Patriot Guard Riders did it that day. I even joined them as a member.

The newspapers said 5 townspeople were arrested for busting up the protestors. (NOTE: no bikers were involved).

There was another funeral there today. That is the 3rd Marine funeral for that town in a month. All the Marines were friends.
