Pfc. Scott Flynn, the U.S. Marine from Marshall who was severely injured in a mortar attack in Iraq in April, is no longer in critical condition but is still fighting serious health problems.

A 2002 Marshall High School graduate, 21-year-old Flynn's condition had been vastly improving, but he had somewhat of a relapse since last weekend, according to Flynn's pastor, Carlton Burris of Immanuel Baptist Church.

"Since last Friday, he's been having problems with his liver and intestines," Burris told the News Messenger Tuesday. "He's already had eight surgeries; he may need one more."

Flynn is still at Bethesda Naval Hospital in Bethesda, Md., with his mother, Diane Flynn. Flynn's brother, also in the military reported back to duty after Flynn's previous improvement.

Flynn was injured in a mortar explosion in April as he and his unit attempted to protect a convoy of Iraqi police. There were 22 Marines hit.

Burris and his wife will be flying to Maryland next Tuesday, Burris said, to spend a week with Flynn and his mother. Burris keeps in contact with Ms. Flynn for updates on the marine's condition.

"We just need people to keep praying," said Burris.

Burris also mentioned that anyone who wants to help financially is welcome to donate to BancorpSouth Bank to an account in Flynn's name.

Those who would like to contribute funds directly for Diane Flynn who "hasn't worked in two months," Burris said, may contact Immanuel Baptist Church at (903) 938-8275 to donate to an account set up for her.
