A consultant for a military housing project is sounding an alert about contaminated soil at Kaneohe Marine Base.

Walter Chun is a consultant for Metcalf Construction Co., the contractor on the 212-unit project of two-story duplexes. "Somebody has to do something because this is not right," said Chun.

Chun said he fears the enlisted Marines and their families who move into the new homes will be exposed to chlordane-contaminated soil.

"This can't be right," said Chun. "I don't think anybody in their right mind can imagine that spreading contaminated dirt in front of these houses is safe."

Chun said tests conducted at the housing project in July showed high levels of chlordane in the soil.

Chlordane is a now-banned termite pesticide.

The Navy issued the following statement: "The experts determined that the chlordane in the soil would not pose a threat to human health or the environment. The overwhelming majority of the soil is safe to use. One small area between two housing foundations requires remediation."

Chun said he believes all of the topsoil in the construction area is contaminated.

Chun said he has filed complaints with the Environmental Protection Agency and the stage Department of Health about his concerns.
