TSA detains Marine escorts
Trio escorting body of fallen comrade are stripped of dress blue coats, searched at airport

By Gidget Fuentes
Times staff writer

It wasn’t the city of “brotherly love” for a trio of Marine noncommissioned officers escorting the body of a fallen Marine through the Philadelphia airport.

Each decked in their blue dress uniforms, the three enlisted Marines made their way through a security checkpoint at the Philadelphia International Airport about noon on May 3 when they were pulled aside by security workers with the federal Transportation Safety Administration.

The Marines — a sergeant and two corporals — were escorting the body of Sgt. Lea R. Mills from Dover Air Force Base, Del., to his family in Gulfport, Miss. Mills, who was married and lived in Oceanside with his wife, was killed in Iraq on April 28 by a roadside bomb. He was one of three leathernecks killed that day in Iraq’s Anbar province.

They were brothers-in-arms. Like Mills, the Marine escorts are members of the Camp Pendleton-based 3rd Assault Amphibian Battalion.

The trio had to go through the terminal’s security in order to reach their flight that would take them to Houston and make sure that Mills’ body was properly placed on the airplane. While their uniforms likely would trigger the metal detector, they had figured they would be able to zip through the screening process and get on with their business.

“Wearing the blues, the metal detector is going to go off,” said Sgt. John Stock, a mechanic, who was accompanied by Cpls. Aaron Bigalk and Jason Schadeburg.

But as the Marines went through the initial screener in their dress blues, they were stopped by several TSA agents. Each was told to remove their dress uniform blouse, belt and black dress shoes, which were scanned by the detector, as the agents scanned them with hand-held detecting wands.

“They had me take off my shoes and ran them through the screening,” Stock said, speaking by phone May 5 from Gulfport, where the men are helping with Mills’ family and funeral support. “We all got searched.”

Then they were taken to a nearby room, where TSA workers patted them down.

At one point, Stock’s shoes disappeared, leaving him to frantically search for them and retrieve them from a TSA agent. Separated from their belongings, which included the flag that they bore that would drape Mills’ casket for the rest of the journey home, they worried about getting to the gate in time to ensure his safe placement in the airplane.

Time, it seemed like a half-hour, clicked by. “I was like, hey, we need to be on the tarmac,” Stock recalled. “It just took longer than it should have had to take.”

The agents said nothing to explain why all three were singled out for additional search and the Marines didn’t protest. “We were just trying to get there as quick as we could,” he added.

In all, it was a humiliating experience that left them angry.

“They could probably tell that I was ****ed off,” said Stock, who noted that he’s never encountered that kind of search when going through airport security in uniform.

“I understand if I was in civilian clothes. But with what we were wearing and what we were doing … ,” he said, noting that “we had the flag with us.”

A call into TSA’s public affairs office in the D.C. area was not returned as of press time.

“The Marine Corps is currently cooperating with (TSA) to resolve this matter,” the command said in statement issued May 5 and provided by 2nd Lt. Lawton King, a 1st Marine Division spokesman at Camp Pendleton.

Here's the thing- yes, this wasn't a pretty thing, BUT, if you wanted to get through airport security in America, what would you do? Hey, how about putting on a uniform and then playing on someone's sympathies with a story about a dead friend? Social engineering at its best. "In god we trust, all others show ID."

Osotogary

Not a good story to read but I was thinking the same thing, LivinSoFree. Somebody seems to have "missed the boat" by not informing TSA about the escorts. Now a days it seems that the "little things" are either taken for granted or totally ignored. TSA certainly has it's management problems, no doubt, but it seems that someone in TSA should seen the escort, pulled them aside, and checked them for clearance before searching them. What happens on the floor is very much dictated by guidelines set by someone who has never been on the floor.

Below is the email I sent .... this whole situation is pathetic!
I am writing in regard to the following linked story:

What are these tsa agents being trained in? Liberal discrimination against military personnel? I find it completely unsatifactory that 3 Marines carrying a flag, sent to do a fallen brother a final service of respect were detained and taken out of their regulation uniforms. I find it offensive that our servicemen are seemingly routinely subjected to these invasive searches.

Let's just say that a person in uniform, carrying travel orders and in possession of a valid Military ID, and the flag of the United States of America to drape the coffin of their fallen brother, is a pretty safe person to let on an air plane! After all they are wearing the uniform of the United States of America. These men have already freely sworn to protect our "country and constitution from all enemies, both domestic and abroad".

Do you really think they have earned the disrespect with which they have been treated?

I find it completely disgraceful that these men, who are so willing to give their all, even down to their very lives for this country to be so dishonored by it's own government's employees.

I and others of the American public will continue writing until the situation and procedural changes that need to be made to avoid this disrespect of our Military Service Members are in place.

My congressmen and senators will also be receiving letters.

Never forget this is a free nation thanks to these brave men and women. They more than any others deserve the respect of the American people.

TSA: Screeners erred in delaying escorts of fallen Marine
Military escorts have special screening rules, says TSA

By Gidget Fuentes
Times staff writer

OCEANSIDE, Calif. – It seems “miscommunication” is to blame for last week’s security mix-up that delayed a trio of leathernecks escorting the body of a fallen Marine through the Philadelphia airport.

The sergeant and two corporals were escorting the body of Sgt. Lea R. Mills, who was, like them, a member of the Camp Pendleton-based 3rd Assault Amphibian Battalion, to Mills’ family in Gulfport, Miss., on May 3 when they were taken over to “secondary” screening at the Philadelphia International Airport. It was there where the Marines were taken to a nearby room by Transportation Security Administration agents and told to remove their blue dress coat, belt and shoes.

According to a TSA official, military escorts usually follow a different set of screening procedures.

“They did not follow these procedures,” said Darrin Kayser, a TSA spokesman in Northern Virginia, told Marine Corps Times on May 8.

“I think in this instance, there was definitely some miscommunication,” Kayser added.

According to Kayser, TSA has special screening guidelines in place for service members who are accompanying the bodies of fallen service members to their families for burial. “These guidelines reflect the agency's utmost respect for those who have lost their lives in service to this country, their families, and those who bring them home with honor,” TSA officials said in a statement provided by Kayser.

“We sincerely regret any inconvenience that Marines from the 1st [Marine] Division experienced during the screening process at Philadelphia International Airport,” the statement said. “We take their concerns very seriously and have communicated directly with Marine Corps leadership.”

Kayser said that provisions are intended to help smooth the process. “It is a fairly regular occurrence, unfortunately, that we have soldiers coming through with remains. There is a process in place that they should follow.”

It’s likely the three escorts, who had come from their Camp Pendleton base to accompany the casket from Dover Air Force Base, Del., weren’t aware of the special rules.

The Marines had gone through the security line to reach their flight that would take them to Houston and then onto Gulfport, and they wanted to ensure that Mills’ body was properly placed on the airplane, said Sgt. John Stock, speaking by phone on May 5.

Stock, who was accompanied by Cpls. Aaron Bigalk and Jason Schadeburg, all wearing their dress uniforms, had expected that they would zip through the screening process. But, they were stopped by several TSA agents, who instructed each Marine to remove their dress blue uniform blouse, belt and black dress shoes before scanning them with a metal detector. The agents then scanned the Marines with hand-held detecting wands. Then, they were taken to a nearby room, where TSA workers patted them down.

“All of us. We all got searched,” Stock said.

Under TSA’s rules, military escorts “are screened at a separate checkpoint,” Kayser said, adding that he would not specify the security procedures.

The agency’s procedures have been in place for some time and are known to the military services and federal security officers at the airports, Kayser said. “We have a federal security director at the airport who will (liaison) with the military,” he added.

“For escorts who stay with a casket, TSA sends security officers to their location for screening and does not require those escorts to go through the regular passenger checkpoint,” the statement said. “If escorts elect to travel through the regular checkpoint, we conduct our usual screening, sensitive to any special needs that may be presented.”

In other words, its not TSA's fault, its the Marines' fault because they did not follow proper procedures? So TSA screeners are not capable of applying the policy to a changing situation and still accomplishing the mission? I hope that terrorist don't try something new!

Think about the security at any Base Armory. Uniform and rank does not give you full access to anything you want. A Sgt can't simply walk in and request a fifty cal.

Now think about the airport security. An imposter in uniform probably would not know the SOP either.

I'm going to use up my first post on this one. Security at the Philadelphia is unbelievable. My son broke his foot at the end of basic training and had to return to PI after his boot leave. (PHL is our closest airport.) Because of time constraints and due to the fact Chris was on crutches and couldn't carry on his Alphas, he wore his Alphas on the plane. He was also subjected to the full search. Chris was fortunate in that he had a screener who picked up on the concept of shirt stays pretty quickly - otherwise who knows what would have happened.

It was a mere inconvenience for Chris, but we thought at the time, what if his injury had been significant or had been in the line of duty? Not much of a thank you. Gotta love those Philadelphians, though. The nasty comments made to TSA as they walked by my son as he was being searched were priceless!

Would it be that difficult to go to a Army Surplus store, buy dress blues, some medals and pass oneself off as a Marine escort at any international airport? I haven't read anywhere (maybe I missed it) where identifications were checked. Am I assuming that individual identification papers would be checked? Would it be out of the realm of probability that some one or group would try something like this?
Consider the high volume of people going through airport terrminals every minute of every day. Consider how many people and baggage have to be screened. Consider that the screener has to be right 100% of the time. Consider that there is a supervisor that is expecting the screeners to be faster and more efficient every day without error.
This seems to be benchmark example of ASSUME. What a dammmm shame.
TSA's passing the blame onto the Marines is hogwash at it's best. The assumed communication, the assumed procedures never happened. Here's hoping that this goes down and filed under "lessons learned".

Apparently not!
So the Federal security director at the airport knows about the agencies procedures. That doesn't necessarily mean that what he/she knows was passed on down the line to the screeners. FUBAR!

I just wanted everyone here to know, SSgt John Stock was killed in Iraq on sept 6th 2007.

Longview Marine killed in Iraq
Twenty-six-year-old dies from car bombing

By SHERRY KOONCE

Friday, September 07, 2007

A Longview U.S. Marine who friends and loved ones say epitomized all that is good about East Texas died in combat Thursday while serving in Iraq.

Staff Sgt. John Christian Stock, 26, was killed in Western Anbar Province while manning a traffic checkpoint. His father, Jerry Stock, said his son's death was the result of a suicide car bomber.

Stock, a member of the 2nd Marine Division 3rd Battalion Bravo Company, initially served four years in the Marines. He was out for six months and then re-enlisted.

He leaves behind his wife, the former Lindsey Tyner of Longview, an 8-year-old stepson, Levin, the couple's 9-month-old son, Wyatt, his father and his mother, Gwen Stock, and four sisters and a brother.

A rosary in Stock's honor will be recited at 8 a.m. today at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 2108 Ridgewood. Led by St. Mary's Catholic School, the rosary is open to the public.

"I've received many visitors throughout the day, and it's very comforting to know how well thought of my son was in the community," Jerry Stock said.

Jerry Stock said his son had been in Iraq since March, which was his first tour of duty there.

Along with his five siblings, John Stock attended St. Mary's Catholic School and was active in the church.

"He was a fine young man, very committed to trying to do something valuable with his life and very committed to his family and his country," said the Rev. Gavin Vaverek, pastor of St. Mary's Catholic Church.

Vaverek said he talked with Stock and his bride-to-be before the couple wed.

"He was considering going back into the Marines, and that was a very serious commitment to make, and his wife Lindsey was very supportive of that choice," Vaverek said. "He very intentionally chose to go back into the Marines to fight the war against terrorism."

Before re-enlisting, Stock studied automotive repair in Houston and continued friendships he'd made in grade school.

Bosten Gisi, 26, had been friends with Stock since early childhood.

"I've known him for 20 years. He was a great guy, very outgoing, had a lot of friends, and always kept a smile on his face," Gisi said.

The boys started Cub Scouts together, then Boy Scouts and earned their Eagle Scout rank when they were both 15, Gisi said.

Gisi's father, Mike, was Stock's assistant Scout master and remembers a jovial young man.

"He was always fun; you could always kid him about something, and he loved to play practical jokes," he said.

When not Scouting, Stock enjoyed athletics. He played soccer at St. Mary's, where he attended through the eighth grade. After transferring to Longview High School, he was a member of the varsity swim team.

Like many East Texas boys, Stock loved music, rock and traditional Southern country artists.

"He like Waylon Jennings, and all the Hanks: Hank Williams, Hank Williams Jr. and Hank III. He had an adventurous and fearless spirit that was evidenced in the many pastimes he enjoyed: kayaking, camping, white water rafting, and mountain climbing," Bosten Gisi said. "He was a good East Texas boy through and through. He was not scared; he had no fear, and that's why Iraq did not scare him. He said he knew what he had to do, and he was proud to do it."

It gets better. My boss and I just got back from a Biz trip to Aisa. At the air port we had went to get our boarding passes and go to the security check point. At the check point my boss went ahead of me and was through, As the TSA checked my pass port I noticed that they had mixed them up at the ticket counter and I had my bosses and likwise he had mine. He made it all the way through security with my passport . Once the TSA looked at my passport I thought she was going drop a load in her pants. Once I explained what happend She very quickly went and exchanged passports. As she did this the other agents looked at her, She turned white as a ghost and pushed me through security. So they will strip down my fellow Marines but dont bother to look at a passport.
