Marines honoring one of their own

Twentynine Palms Marines today will rename their chow hall in honor of a 19-year-old Colorado native killed in combat in Iraq in 2004.
U.S. Marine Lance Cpl. Chance Phelps who was based out of Twentynine Palms, was conducting combat operations in the Al Anbar province of Iraq with the 3rd Battalion, 11th Marine Regiment when he was killed April 9.
Phelps, who was posthumously promoted to lance corporal, saved a number of his fellow Marines during the incident.
He was also awarded the Bronze Star Medal with Combat Distinguishing Device after his death.
The dedication ceremony, held at the Air Ground Combat Center in Twentynine Palms, is slatted for noon.
His parents will be in attendance.
