BULLHEAD CITY - Sgt. Edward Davis III, crew leader of an amphibious assault vehicle who earlier this year volunteered for a tour of duty in Iraq in hopes of furthering his career in the Marines, was killed Thursday night in Iraq.

“He volunteered to go to Iraq,” his mother Nancy Komes said. “It's not like they made him go; he wanted to. He wanted to make the Marines a career and knew he needed to serve overseas during wartime.”

Davis, father of three children, 10-year-old Priscilla, 3-year-old Alyssa and 2-year-old Eddie, was planning to re-enlist while overseas, his mother said.

“He had seven years in,” she said. “He hadn't even been over there a month.”

Davis, a 31-year-old Waukegan, Ill., native, had visited his mother in Bullhead City many times, and the family made a trip every other month to visit him in Camp Pendleton, Calif., where he was stationed.

“He loved his children,” Komes said. “His little boy will be 2 on June 8, that was Eddie's birthday too. He's not even going to know his daddy.”

The family was notified early Friday morning that their son had been killed during active duty, Komes said.

According to Davis father, Edward Davis Jr., Davis' wife Preena was informed that his Humvee was struck by a bomb while on patrol, possibly near the Euphrates River.

“This is all senseless, and the (insurgents) over there are all cowards,” Davis Jr. said. “I'm just devastated. It's a surreal experience.”

The family is waiting for more information from the military and was told arrangement for services could be made in seven to 10 days, Komes said.

“I'm doing awful,” she said. “His poor children, his poor wife.”

Komes described her son as “the biggest jokester in the world” except when it came to his job.

“He was so fun-loving and funny,” she said. “But when it came to being a soldier, he took that very seriously.”
