A Bill May Give Veterans Overdue Benefits

APRIL 26, 2006 -- For decades, the merchant marines delivered food, ammunition, weapons, fuel, as well as other supplies to other branches of the military in times of conflict. Whether it was operation Iraqi Freedom, or the world wars, merchant marines were the ones who shipped and delivered countless cargo. However, World War II veterans of the merchant marine were long considered civilians. They received little recognition and no benefit from the government. Despite that, a couple of merchant mariners say, they'd do it again if they had to. A bill is being discussed in congress, that may give these veterans long-overdue benefits.
