WWII Vet info?

hello. i'm wondering if anyone can tell me how to find records of my Grandfathers warrants/medals/ etc. He passed away a few years ago, and my Grandmother is making a memorial piece for him, but doesn't know if she has all of his medals. His name is Lester F Hardigree,and I'm pretty sure he was in either 2nd or 4th Marine div.... I know he fought on Saipan, and Grandma is swearing he was on Iwo Jima as well (so that makes him 4th div right?)

She's not the most computer savvy person, so I told her i would try to help her with this, since it's so important to our family.

I'm asking you guys first since you've always come through for me with all my silly poolee questions :)

On the homepage of Leathneck there is a link to order a DD214 this should get things started for you. I will show his decorations, badges personal decorations and the unit that he was in at his time of discharge. I thank you for honoring a fellow Marine the way you are doing this.

You will need at a minimum your grandfather's social security number and that should be all you need I believe. Yes your grandfather has regrouped with St. Peter (via hell) to make heaven and safer and happier place. And you are most welcome young lady.

I put in a DD 214 request a few days ago for my mom. I didn't have my grandfather's social security number (I found it today ... you can find it through the Social Security Death Index ...) but I had dates of birth and death, place of birth and a couple other pieces of information.
jenjen, you're fortunate to have known your grandfather and it's cool you're helping your grandmother put together a display. I look forward to hearing about how your efforts to locate his records go.
