SAN DIEGO -- Nine Marines were remembered at Camp Pendleton Friday, along with all of the Marines who have died in Iraq.

The majority of the men died in attacks last October and November, NBC 7/39 reported. Eight of the nine men died in Operation Steel Curtain, a mission designed to eliminate the Iraqi insurgency. The ninth Marine died in a vehicle accident in the Al Anbar province.

Helmets, boots and guns were placed in front each Marine's picture. The men's names were read, followed by the ring of a bell and a moment of silence.

"The leadership of the Marine Corps is entrenched in the small units in the campaign," said Battalion Cmdr. Robert Ultman. "These Marines, on a daily basis, interacted with their fellow Marines. We're the leaders of the Marines. You can't unplug leadership like that and not have it be felt."

All of the men were highly decorated. Most received Purple Hearts, and a company commander was among those killed.

Seven of the nine Marines were stationed at Camp Pendleton.
