A Marine Corps officer died Tuesday afternoon after her car was struck by a dump truck on Ribaut Road just before the foot of the east side of the Russell Bell Bridge, according to the Port Royal Police Department.

The lieutenant colonel, who was stationed at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, was turning left from Lenora Drive onto Ribaut Road in her 1999 Honda Civic at about 4:12 p.m. when a dump truck traveling west on Ribaut hit the driver's side of her car, Port Royal police Sgt. Andre Massey said.

The police department released the Marine's name Tuesday, but Parris Island spokesman Maj. Guillermo Canedo requested that it not be published until the Corps notifies the next of kin.

Canedo confirmed that a senior officer died in the accident but declined to comment further.

According to witnesses, the truck driver "blew his horn, slammed on his brakes," Massey said. "There was nothing more he could do. The dump truck driver did everything he could to avoid an accident."

The Marine was trapped inside her car, but Massey said she was removed quickly and taken by Beaufort County EMS to Beaufort Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The truck driver wasn't injured, Beaufort fire marshal Dan Byrne said.

All four lanes of the Russell Bell Bridge were closed for about an hour, backing up traffic throughout Port Royal and Beaufort.

The Burton Fire District and the Beaufort and Port Royal fire departments responded to the wreck. The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office and the Beaufort Police Department helped direct traffic.
