Here are two pictures that were awarded first and second place at the picture of the year international this year. Very very touching photos.
First Place

First Place
Todd Heisler The Rocky Mountain News
When 2nd Lt. James Cathey's body arrived at the Reno Airport, Marines climbed into the cargo hold of the plane and draped the flag over his casket as passengers watched the family gather on the tarmac. During the arrival of another Marine's casket last year at Denver International Airport, Major Steve Beck described the scene as one of the most powerful in the process: "See the people in the windows? They'll sit right there in the plane, watching those Marines. You gotta wonder what's going through their minds, knowing that they're on the plane that brought him home," he said. "They're going to remember being on that plane for the rest of their lives. They're going to remember bringing that Marine home. And they should."

Second Place

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v733/Ed15Palmer/cid_016c01c653aa99326400d3286744you.jpg

Second Place
Todd Heisler The Rocky Mountain News
The night before the burial of her husband's body, Katherine Cathey refused to leave the casket, asking to sleep next to his body for the last time. The Marines made a bed for her, tucking in the sheets below the flag. Before she fell asleep, she opened her laptop computer and played songs that reminded her of 'Cat,' and one of the Marines asked if she wanted them to continue standing watch as she slept. "I think it would be kind of nice if you! kept doing it," she said. "I think that's what he would have wanted."

If a picture is worth a thousand words, then this says a hole lot more than protestors could ever say.

Ed you are correct this is a real tear generator. Thank you...!!!

This series of articles that ran last year in the Rocky Mountain News is one of the few remaining examples of excellence when it comes to photo journalism. The photographer's respect for the subject is quite obvious while at the same time communicating visually what can not often be put in words. Great job Todd Heisler, and thank you for honoring our Marines.

For the ones that give their life, there are the loved ones that are left behind that suffer with the loss for the rest of their days and some never do recover from their grief. So many fathers, mothers, siblings, sons & daughters and relatives have been shattered emotionally by this war. Perhaps if our leadership in Washington looked at these pictures on a daily basis it would finally sink in that there has to be something done to end these tragedies.
When I was in, we made it a point to try to protect those Marines that were married and had families - the ones that were single would take the brunt of the dangerous duties if possible - I hope its still that way. Good job Ed. SF

Here is another tribute for a Marine Cpl who paid the Ultimate sacrafice for his country. Probably the best video I have ever seen. 2 different links to the same video. Tell me what you think.

Thank you for finding this tribute of Cpl Warns. I had heard about it but had not seen it yet. Damn powerfull. I work outside the front gate at Quantico in Dumfries Virginia at Jacobs-Sverdrup Technolgies. On Tuesday the 4th of April we had our conference center dedicated to Cpl Brett Lundstrom. Cpl Lundstrom's father is a retired Major (mustang). Cpl Lunstrom was killed in Iraq in January by small arms fire. To be in the presents of a family when a memorial is dedicated was way beyond my comprehension till this past Tuesday.

Rest in Peace

 That one really hurt...I still remember seeing the original on local TV and I still feel the tightness in my chest at the loss of another brave Marine. As a mother whose sons both served I can relate to their loss, knowing how I would feel if that was one of my sons or daughters. :iwo: :flag: Semper Fi, Cpl Warnes and may God bless your family.

Damn, my eyes won't quit leaking. Thanks Sgt. Wildes, and again to you, for providing us with this. The sacrifices these fine Marines made for us makes me that much prouder to carry the title of Marine. Rest in Peace, my Brothers. I look forward to the day that I can meet you at the gates.
