I leave for MCRD SD 20060403. My 1.5 mile time is 10:32 so thats not a problem, i can do plenty of crunches and push-ups in the time allowed so thats not a problem, but one thing is giving me all kinds of trouble.... I am not the strongest person and I can barely do 2 pull-ups. And i can only get 2 when i am fresh, and not fatigued at all. Ive gone from doing none to 2 pull ups in about a month and a half, so I would think I can get to atleast 3 in the next 3 weeks. Im pretty tall, and i hear sometimes the taller guys have more trouble. I would REALLY like to get to 4 by the time I ship. PLEASE HELP. any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Armstrong Pullup Program (http://www.4mcd.usmc.mil/AOP/OSOHyattsville/Armstrong%20Pullup%20Program.htm)

Hit that, and hit it hard, you should get somewhere.

Thats less than a month to train. Not much time.. heres something to consider - I did it during boot camp and it helped me out quite a bit.

You'll find yourself making A LOT of head calls throughout the night at MCRD. Everytime you kick out a head call, max set of pullups. Thats all, 1 max set.

Keep it in mind when you arrive on the island..

a little off topic but, are a certain number of pushups required? I thought it was only crunches and pull-ups.

Crunches, pull/chin-ups, and a 3 mile run for the PFT, though I'm sure we'll still be doing billions upon billions of pushups.

The Armstrong Pullup Program and the Recon Ron Pullup Program are both absolutely great, however when you're doing only 2 pullups they're not really effective since you can't do most of the requirements.

When I first started I could not even do 1 pullup and now i'm doing 9. I don't know if you have a pullup bar or not, but get one for your house. Do your two pullups in the morning and then get a chair and step up with your chin above the bar and then lift your feet up and just slowly do the downward part of a pullup. Once you've come to a dead hang, step back up and do it again. Do this 10 times and the slower you lower yourself down, the better. Do this 3 times a day (morning, noon, and night) 6 days a week and then rest on the 7th day, the goal is to do at least 30 pullups per day even if it's just the downward part.

After one month of this You'll easily be doing 5 or 6 pullups at least going in to boot camp.

Believe it or not, your diet has a LOT to do with your strength as far as pullups go. Right after you do pullups you should have some carbs and protein to build as much muscle as possible, but don't have any carbs after your set at night though.

Yeah, someone told me you had to do 44 push ups in 2 min. They were wrong though, i did my IST last week and push ups werent involved, sorry bout the mistake.

I started out doing 2 pullups barely. What worked for me was doing max sets of pullups even if it is only 2 and then pushups every night (until arms give out) this more than doubled my pullups in about a month. But good luck and when you do leave make sure to come back a Marine.
