Female Marines come together for food, discussion
MCB Quantico
Story by: Cpl. Susan Smith

MARINE CORPS BASE QUANTICO, Va.(March 9, 2006) -- “We are women Marines, and we march with pride. We march shoulder to shoulder and side by side.”

If you graduated from 4th Battalion at Marine Corps recruit Depot Parris Island, S.C., chances are you sang, or at least heard this “Lady Leatherneck” song. The lyrics capture the bond that is created between females after spending 13 weeks together, day in and day out.

A small group of women Marines aboard Quantico are working toward reviving that boot camp bond and stick-together attitude among the females on base.

“Females tend to be judgmental, especially about each other,” said Staff Sgt. Myra Scott, commutation and electronics division. “We would be a stronger Corps if we could get past that and join together.”

Scott started the Women Marine Mentoring Program last quarter and held the second meeting Friday at The Clubs At Quantico.

Just six Marines attended the event, but Scott and the rest of the group are confident that once the word is out, more will come next quarter.

The Marines spent the first few hours of the morning talking about their time in the Marine Corps, which ranged from one to nine years, and what they have learned about the role women play in the military.

We need to support each other more,” Scott said. “Mentoring and sharing our past experiences will help us get to where we really need to be.”

After deep discussion, the ladies broke for lunch off base. According to attendees, seeing each other in civilian clothing and in a civilians setting made it easier to talk to one another.

The group spent the rest of the day together, alternating conversation topics between work, family, friends and back to work again.

Scott is looking for guest speakers and ideas for discussion for the next event.
