Marines Head to Kokomo for Soldier's Funeral

WISH, IN

Today, an Indiana soldier killed in action will be laid to rest. Several Marines and even Governor Mitch Daniels are trying to make sure the services will be peaceful.

Early Monday morning, a group of Marines from the Indianapolis area left in a caravan to go to Kokomo for the funeral of Army Sgt. Rickey Jones who was killed in action on February 22.

The Marines say they wanted to go not only to show their support for the family of Sgt. Jones but also to act as a shield from possible protestors, protestors who have been known to attend military funerals saying its retribution for society's gay culture.

Governor Daniels signed a bill into law late last week restricting these types of protests. 24-Hour News 8 talked to Marines about this new law.

"That'll keep them back away from the family and allow the family to do their thing with the funeral and have their grief in private," said Commandant Russ Eaglin with the United States Marine Corps.

With this new law, protestors are required to stay at least 500 feet away.

The funeral begins at 10:00 a.m. in Kokomo, and many people are expected to attend, including 300 Marines. Governor Daniels is also expected to attend along with several other dignitaries.
