Over the past month or so I have been doing some research for a project of
mine and it dealt with Marine Corps heroes. First I looked for Marine Officer
heroes and lets just say there is no shortage of Marine Officers who have made
significant influences on the Corps. Now, the part of the research that really
started to get to me... the Enlisted Marine Hero. If we sit down for a couple of
minutes we would all probably spit out the same few names...

Daly
Quick
Hathcock
Basilone
Mackie

I know there are a few others that some of you may know about, but for the sake
of this discussion I am going with the five that people really know. What I am
getting at here is why aren't there more enlisted Marine Heroes? Aren't they the
ones who really get out there and fight the battles. I know I could read all the
Medal of Honor citations and find plenty of heroes, but I am talking about the
ones we are taught about in boot camp and the ones Marines talk about. Even if
you go the Marine Museum website you find about 10 officers for every enlisted
Marine on the Who's Who of Marine Corps history. Can anyone out there try to
explain to my why it is that the enlisted Marine seems to get no respect? I
would really like to read what you have to think.

Also, here are four enlisted Marine questions I would like you to honestly
answer without looking anything up. These are pretty significant people that
Marines should know, but probably don't.

1. Who was the first Sergeant Major?
2. Who was the first Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps?
3. Who was the first Sergeant Major of Women Marines?
4. Did you know this billet existed?

If anyone is feeling froggy I challenge you to make a list of 20... no too
hard... 15 enlisted Marines that we should know about and why we should know
about them.

Semper Fi and Happy Holidays!

I have never done a webpage as such on Daly--but here are a few bits and pieces that I, and others, posted a while ago to FR--as usual, once ya start digging into historical facts, it seems as though we are less and less certain of the things we have always taken for granted.

I have a new touched-up Pic of Basilone (somewhere) from Ray Fornoff that they intend to use, or have used, in a new book on Basilone.

regarding why more officers than enlisted...--is that many of the officers were previously enlisted Marines, and therefore should count as enlisted Marines, but aren't, e.g. Col Wm. "Ironman" Lee was, during the Banana Wars, Chesty Puller's sidekick (of sorts) as a Sgt and GySgt.

Others, were not altogether MOH class heroes like Thomason who earned the first Marine MOH (Makin Raid) of the USMC WW II, though that claim is often also erroneously made for Basilone.

Also, I think, the actual THREE (3) Iwo Jima Flag Raisers are in this category--Lt Harlod George Schrier, retired a general, originally an enlisted Marine 2dRaiderBn, and in the Corps for several years prior to WW II, and PltSgt Thomas, and Sgt Hansen, both KIA Iwo Jima.

And there is the Politically Incorrect, Lou Diamond who certainly also fits into the hero/character categoty...

There's a start.
