A soldier was arrested Saturday afternoon with about 199 kilograms of marijuana after he led police on a high-speed chase along local turnpikes.

South Jakarta Police chief Sr. Comr. Williardi Wizar identified the man as 31-year-old Pvt. Efrizal, who is stationed at Marine Corps Headquarters in Cilandak, South Jakarta.

Another member of the marines, who was not identified, was arrested later in the afternoon from Efrizal's information.

"We are still detaining them here as we haven't finished questioning. We want to find out the other people implicated in this case. Right now, all we know that Efrizal brought the marijuana from Aceh by car," Williardi told The Jakarta Post.

The marijuana's estimated street value was about Rp 360 million (US$37,894).

During preliminary questioning, Efrizal said he was delivering the drug to clients, who paid Rp 1.8 million per kilogram. In Aceh, he bought the marijuana for Rp 300,000 per kilogram.

A passing police car noticed a stack of packages inside Efrizal's silver van as he drove through the Cibubur tollgate in East Jakarta.

When police motioned for him to pull over, Efrizal sped away and brushed against several other vehicles. The police fired several warning shots but he refused to stop.

The chase ended at Pondok Aren toll gate when Efrizal was stuck at the end of a long line of vehicles. He was arrested without further resistance.

Meanwhile, East and West Jakarta Police confiscated several kilograms of heroin after arresting several alleged drug syndicate members.

West Jakarta Police chief Sr. Comr. Edward Syah Pernong said they arrested a foreigner and his local assistants in a drug raid on Saturday evening.

"We can't reveal their names yet as we want to arrest all the members of their syndicate," he told the Post on Sunday. (05)
