LONGMONT - Colorado has a rich legacy of war heroes -- men and women who served their nation in wartime with distinction. One such war hero recently turned up in an unexpected place.

The cars roar by on Main Street in Longmont. A tattered flag blows over a fast food joint. Across the way, behind the loan shop, there's a trailer. And inside, you'll find 84-year-old Alan Day June. It's a humble place - but still a more comfortable setting than he's known for some time.

June and his wife Virginia are Navajo. Until recently, they were homeless - even kicked out of an all night coin laundry where they'd gone to get warm.

One of their few possessions caught someone's eye - a picture of Alan being honored by President George W. Bush.

It turns out, Alan Day June is one of the last two surviving Navajo code talkers. That is, June was one of 29 young Indian men who developed an uncrackable code based on their native language that was used to relay key battle instructions in the Pacific theater during WWII.

Some historians say without the Navajo code talkers American Marines might not have won the battle for the island of Iwo Jima, one of the turning points in the war against Japan.

The Longmont American Legion Post 32 heard about Alan and Virginia and raised money to buy them their trailer.
