Marines to inaugurate Osprey squadron
KVIA

NEW RIVER MARINE CORPS AIR STATION, N.C. The Marine Corps today plans to formally activate the first squadron flying the innovative and long-planned Osprey aircraft.

A ceremony to inaugurate Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 263 is planned in North Carolina at Marine Corps Air Station New River, next to Camp Lejeune.About 250 people and nine aircraft will be part of the squadron.Ospreys will replace a Vietnam-era fleet of twin-rotor helicopters that are so worn that they can't carry a full payload. The Osprey, which takes off and lands like a helicopter and flies like an airplane, can carry more cargo and fly five times farther at speeds around 300 miles an hour. The aircraft is built in Amarillo by Boeing's helicopter division in suburban Philadelphia and Bell Helicopter Textron of Fort Worth.
