"Teufelhunden" - Devil Dogs!

The following from the book, "The United States Marines-A History," by Edwin Howard Simmons, Naval Institute Press,1974, 3dEdition. page 100....

"The Germans made their own sober assessment and begrudgingly allowed that the marines, with more experience, might be considered to be of storm-trooper quality. The marines earnestly told each other that the Heinies were calling them 'Teufelhunden,' or 'Devildogs,' but there is no evidence of this in German records."

(Note: the above regarding Belleau Wood, 1918)

Gunny, remember that the historcal records of Tun Tavern are sketchy at best (as far as what I've read) and I don't think we have figured out where the term "OOH-RAH" came from either. It may be that those documents, if they ever existed, have been destroyed years ago, so that Mr(?) Simmons would be unable to find those types of documents. It is possible that there were letters sent home on the German side that might have the term "Teufelhunden", but have been destroyed or lost, or more than likely just thrown away in the past 85 years. Whether fact, fiction, mistic, or legend, WE are Leathernecks, Devil Dogs, MARINES. Respectfully, Semper FI. Dave out.
