Marines killed in Iraq

MCAGCC - Officials here mourn the loss of a Marine who died Saturday, Feb. 25 from an improvised explosive device in Ar Ramadi, Iraq.

Lance Cpl. Adam J. Vanalstine, 21, of Superior, Wis., was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Twentynine Palms. As part of Operation Iraqi Freedom, his unit was attached to 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward).

Vanalstine was born Nov. 2, 1984, in Duluth, Minn., and joined the Marine Corps Nov. 8, 2004. He was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines as a rifleman in April 2005, and deployed to Iraq in September to serve in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Vanalstine's awards include the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and the Sea Service Deployment ribbon. Vanalstine is survived by his sister, Dawn Meyers, of Cottage Grove, Minn.

Officials here also mourn the loss of a Marine who died Feb. 21 at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, Germany, from wounds received Saturday, Feb. 18 as a result of an improvised explosive device while conducting combat operations against enemy forces in Al Anbar province, Iraq. Second Lt. Almar L. Fitzgerald, 23, of Lexington, S.C., was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Twentynine Palms.

As part of Operation Iraqi Freedom, his unit was attached to 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward). Fitzgerald was born Sept. 21, 1982, in Columbia, S.C., and joined the Marine Corps Aug. 13, 2004.

He was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines as a platoon commander in July 2005, and deployed to Iraq in September to serve in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
