YUMA - Five different units at Marine Corps Air Station Yuma are taking turns going to five Yuma schools each month in what officials say is an effort to give back to the community.
The Marines participate in activities ranging from reading to children to simply talking to them about life in the military to playing sports. The activities aren't the same each month.

"The idea is for the Marines to get involved in the community and for the children to have role models, someone they can look up to," said 1st Lt. Kevin Schultz, a spokesman for the air station.
The visits are part of Partnership in Education, a national program where military personnel volunteer at elementary and middle schools. This semester is the first time it has been offered in Yuma, said Schultz.
Sgt. Ricardo Saldana, one of the volunteers, emphasized that the program is not a recruiting tool and that the children aren't the only ones benefiting from it.
