Yeah... I will so totally keep that in mind... Although a female recruiter i talked to said we couldn't get anythingl like that... We had to use what was issued to us... But then again that was like 4 or 5 years ago...

I did some research and found information I did not know about PI and San Diego. It took quite a bit of digging ...By 1915, East Coast recruit training was centralized at MCRD Parris Island, S.C. In 1923, MCRD San Diego assumed the duties as the sole recruit depot for the West Coast.
I had no idea that MCRD San Diego was that old. For some reason I thought it was much newer then that. Go figure.

Ha Shadowman you know just like i do the PI guys are sensitive about where they trained.. you know what the old saying goes..
Whats the difference between SD and PI??
They train women at PI :)
If Parris Island turned a girl like me into a man, that would mean it turns a boy into a woman. Makes sense to me.

How are you doing Devil Pups? Let me give it to you straight and direct as can be. Marine Corps training is Marine Corps training! Boot Camp is Boot Camp regardless where you go. I had a Drill instructor that went to Boot Camp at Parris Island. He was a Drill Instructor at San Diego. There is no difference. You want my opinion? When I was stationed at Camp Pendleton 1st Marine Division. I noticed one thing, some marines from the East Coast had a hard time running up those hills that we used to PT on. You can say what you want and believe what you want. The reality is I had no problem running in the East Cost weather and climate while I was stationed there. When you go the West Coast to any of the units out there you better be prepared to suck it up on those hills. If you get sent to Okinawa (the Rock) it is the same issue at CTA, NTA. Last but not least if you go to Korea and the Mountains or Mt Fuji in Japan you really need to be in good shape otherwise you are going to be in a world of hurt. Good Luck there Devil Pups!

Good point - and one that I was thinking about earlier. PI is very flat, and no hills to speak of.
I thought I heard that they plowed the hills in PI to make it easier for WM's - but that could be just rumor ... GRIN. (Now I'm in trouble - lol)

Shadowman - you are so full of it (big grin) - plowing hills for WMs..........kinda hard to plow a hill in a freakin' swamp!
Either place for boot camp is just as bad as the other - you got the hills on the west coast and humidity and sand fleas on the east. But all you newbies better not swat at them sand fleas - they got to eat too (according to every DI that ever caught me swattin' at them). Back when I went through we used Skin So Soft (Avon makes it) but they made us quit using it cause it doesn't let you sweat cool your body down when you run. It was damned good for them sand fleas though!

I am going to PI on 20060917
I actually want to go, because I did here it was tougher.
CrazyBrave83
03-03-06, 12:22 PM
Neither is tougher than the other, at least in terms of training.
Regardless of where you go you'll be following the SAME Matrix the RTR for the Depot uses. It's not Depot specific, it's Corps-wide. Granted, San Diego has changed the order of certain things, but don't worry, you'll still be tackling them.
I was at Parris Island. I think the reason PI may be viewed as 'tougher' is two-fold. One? It's the older brother. It edges MCRD San Diego out when it comes to the USMC Mythos, if only slightly. But the other reason is because it's alone in the middle of a swamp, one road in, one road out. Compare that to San Diego, which is right next to an airport and in the middle of Urban sprawl.
Don't fret though. Your Drill Instructors know EXACTLY how to make it feel like you're stuck in an alternate universe, regardless of your surroundings.
Swamps and Sand Fleas?
Hills and Hollywood?
It doesn't matter. The equation equals MARINE. End of story.

I don't know, I'd almost think that would make it harder. At least at PI you're isolated and you can be like "Well, everyone here is a Marine or hoping to be one, and so I'm surrounded by everyone that is like me"
Whereas at San Diego you are seeing people flying away constantly and know that there are beaches full of hotties a couple miles away, and more clubs and bars than you can count.
And Pacific Beach.. oh god.. it's gonna be torture knowing PB is so close yet.. so far.

Think about it man. There are maybe 1000+ Females on Parris Island at any given time. When you're at MCRDSD you know that there are literally millions of California girls within 10 miles of you.
And thousands of them are laying on the beach in bikinis...
And all you get to see is your fellow recruits in tighty whities!!

MKocher - you kill me boy - I've been sitting here laughing my ass off reading your posts. Yeah there will be 1000 females on PI at any given time but, trust me, when a platoon of them comes your way, YOUR DI will make your platoon do an about face so you CAN'T look at them. Sometimes the guys DI will not only make you do an about face but will also IPT your asses to the point of exhaustion just so you will forget about it. And I'm sure the ladies will love your poolee ass but they won't be thinking about you either - nothing personal - just the way it is. I know I didn't think about one until the little bit of liberty we got at the end of boot camp and we got to mingle with some guys for a while. I still have pictures of some fine fella that I met that day and never even knew his name but he was cute as hell so I asked if he would have a picture made with me so I could take it back home and tell some lies. After boot camp I felt like a kid in a candy store everywhere I went because the ratio of men to women was greater no matter where I was stationed. Good luck in the Corps.

I got to see the wm's up close and personal at PI in '79. One of the perks for qualifying Expert on the rifle range was we got to serve chow to the wm's. That was NOT a perk let me tell you. Can u say "rough" looking? lol
I am guessing they did not allow you to wear make up until the end of third phase? I am sure that all changed before 1984 though (as Steve digs to get his butt out of trouble ...)

We didn't get to wear makeup until later and even then we had about a 1/2 day where they gave us a class on how to apply the sh_t, if you can believe that. That was about 1/2 of a wasted day! The roughest it ever got for me was the 3 days we had to go without a shower staying in the swamp. We all knew that a shower was going to be the first thing we got to do when we got back to the squadbay but our DIs weren't done hazing the fool out of us. We had to get in formation and fall out 3 or 4 times because all 70 some odd of us couldn't get through the doors and online as fast as they wanted us to. It's funny as hell looking back on it................

Ok so all of you who are going to Parris Island. Stop worrying so much. I went to boot camp there I graduated Feb. 14, 2003. As long as you do exactly what you are told to do and do it fast and with no lip you will be ok..I suggest that when you go to the PX for the first time you get only what you are told to get...The DI's will check and you will get quarter decked if you act stupid and get things that you are not suppose to. Just remember that it will only be as bad as you make it. Just listen to everything that is said to you should be just fine;) .. be prepared to get a lot of shots...hope that no one is afraid of needles.

I was there during the winter months so i am not sure if you are allowed to purchase off for the sandfleas...although there were times when it was warm enough for sandfleas and they did come out (my graduation day, we had to deal with them) The drill instructors will let you know what you can buy and what you cant. From what I experienced women are treated like equals. I made it throught boot and was at Camp Gieger for MCT when I got discharged for medical reasons. I wouldnt suggest that you just stay in all night and study or work out, get out there and make friends and have some fun just dont act stupid and you will be fun. that is once you get out of boot camp, until then just listen to anything and everything people tell you. my aol screenname is h0tm4ry22

I mean how dumb would it look to have a high and tight, and then all kinds of fur sticking out the back of your neck? Little chest hairs sticking above the T-shirt neckline also go. And those long flowing nasil hairs? One of those could fall out and the enemy could use it to make a bomb!
Hey the Corps does a great job of cleaning us guys up! I still impliment all of those techniques today.

1st off, you are gonna be in some deep doo-doo after some folks see that you wrote - WM's.
2nd, methinks that a 'Yes, Maam', or something similar, to Ms Green would be much more sufficent than a raging hormomal impedence by a young pup with a certain lack of respect. Ms Green IS a Marine, has paid her dues, and demands a bit of respect.
Thirdly, being a poor ole Marine meownself, I bet a dollar to a day old dog turd that I can get away with a 'WOW', but you, civilian, might soon be getting thrashed mightily from some of the Marines on this board.
Lastly, Ms Green is a fellow Georgian like myself, and I will take her side, along with the side of any fellow Marine FIRST.

Sir,
I'm gonna bet dollars to doughnuts that Marine84 probably didn't mind what I said at all. If she does, I'll be glad to apologize to her.
Second, from what I've seen I thought WM or FM was the proper term? In fact, that is what I've seen most of the women on this board use. If I was mistaken, that's all it was. A simple mistake, definately didn't mean any offence by it.
Third, I don't lack respect at all, for anyone on this board, so I'm not sure where that came from. As far as I know, complimenting someone on their physical appearance isn't showing a lack of respect at all? She was specifically posting those pictures for people to comment on, if you read back through the thread, so I am going to respectfully disagree with you that I was out of line at all.

Believe me, in boot camp - sex will be the LAST thing on any recruits mind! You'll just be thinking about surviving the next day! You shall see!
The great thing in becoming a Marine is that you will grow, mature, and find out more about yourself just 3 months then most will do in an entire lifetime. Your life will turn 360 degrees - 3 or 4 times in boot. The bad thing is - your slimey civilian friends will be EXACTLY the way they were before you left. And that will be difficult to comprehend since you've changed sooo much. IF you make it that is! :qmark: :qmark: :qmark:

No need to use it because during times of High Stress(Boot Camp) the body stops producing the hormone required to have ejaculation.. Now im not saying you cannot still get things up or that you cannot get things that happen to be up off.. but it will take tons of time.. and well yeah thats all im saying stress reduces the sex drive and because of that most wont be interested while in boot camp.. even though sex also reduces stress.. but thats for another discussion..

Boot camp won't be funny until you get through it - when I went through, the only thing I could think of was "what the hell have I done?" but now (22 years later) I can honestly laugh about the majority of it. Sounds like you're in the same boat I was in - I hated my little small town in the middle of the Bible Belt, if you weren't white you were black, everybody knows everybody and they've all done one another at some point in their lives. I couldn't wait to get out and the Corps was the fastest way without my having to save money from the piddly minimum wage job I had back then.
And it's natural to be scared about boot camp - it's the fear of the unknown. You'll still be scared to death for the first few weeks but after you figure out what's expected of you, it will be fine.

Yeah, most poolees here are going enlisted, myself included. Though I'm aiming for MECEP (if thats how it's spelled) to get my college completed and then to serve as an officer. Had a funriture delivery to a retired Major from the Marines. My father landed in Normandy, had an uncle in Korea, an uncle in the 101st Airborne who was a medic in Nam and my cousin who was also a 101st in Nam. ALL ARMY. Not to mention two nephews who also join the army. So i wanted to be different. PI was the best place and times of my life. So enjoy the ride girls.:nerd:

LOL - they are scared for you! Not a bad thing as they love you. My father was the same way. He was an Army puke. To this day he still has to tell me how Army boot was "tougher" then it is now - when *he* was in. My uncle (a Marine) and I just look at each with a grin, knowing he doesn't even have a clue!!! You will find this from your family as well. It is OK though. You just smile with the full knowledge that they have never been through the meat grinder - nor can they ever comprehend it. You will face adversity the likes of which they will NEVER EVER known, and be tranformed from a piece of coal into a diamond!
I wish I could do it again!!!!

The proper word for naval personnel is "Squid." BUT ... not until you make it through boot camp. It is only then that you earn the right to call them the tentacled non-hackers that they are.

You are a recruit! But that's not the name you are after --- it is Marine!
It could be worse. Sometime between 1979 and 2002, the Corps changed names. When I was in, we were called "Privates" not "recruits" in boot camp. So, going with what I knew, my first bunch of letters to my son at Parris Island were, "Private Stephen ..." My son gave me the heads up about 2 weeks in, but said the DI's gave him weird looks when my letters got there. Could be they remembered when they were "privates" at boot too.

My son is a recruit at PI right NOW. The sand fleas are BAD...They use skin so soft to repel the nasty things. Whatever you do don't scratch the bites , they can get infected..and if you do get an infection tell your Di. Lots of recruits hate saying anything about needing medical care and end up really sick and getting dropped because they have missed training ....Also ask your recruiter about getting a shot for pnenomia,,,lot of recruits get the "recruit crud" and feel likr s**t while on the Island...other than that my son said
"Boot is not as hard as I thought it would be, all you have to do is do as you are told, nothing more, nothing less"
He has 27 days to go till Grad . OOH RAH
Good luck to all of you, believe me when I say I'm honored to know such brave future Marines

True there are some nasty bugs there. My son went through that.
Your son was right on - do what you are told, nothing more, nothing less. The Corps has little tolerance for smart @ss know-it-alls. They do a great job at rectifying that problem - LOL! (Psst ... I was concerned by *MY* son in that regard!) The Corps solved that problem in a heartbeat!
You do realize that you won't recognize your son when he gets home don't you? MAKE SURE YOU TAKE VIDEOS - especially of the first day home. He won't be able to sit, stand or eat - unless in a proficient military manner! He won't be able to unwind for a week or better. God - I am still that way today to a certain degree! Sheesh I remember going to a club with friends after boot camp, and I stood in the club at "parade rest" the entire time!
Be proud mom!

I'm so proud I'm almost bursting.
Getting ready to put "Proud Marine Mom" stickers all over my car.
Next week is BWT and then the Crucible....so I'll be holding my breath for the next few days.
On another site I post on we,Mike Co, have a moderator that takes pictures of our recruits so I have seen the change and also hear it in my sons letters.
He said he won't look down on us civillians too much when he gets home..lol
I hope he can relax a little.
by the way my son's name is Steven too.
Good name, great kid, Proud (almost) Marine
Any questions on PI, let me know. Any females have question out there about boot camp, all you gotta do is ask.

That would be sweet if they did offer it. I swear the crap they gave us actually attracted the foul critters!
No worries poole - it's not all that bad. We have to embellish the stories a little bit don't we??? It's not so much the sand fleas biting exposed skin, as it is when they crawl into your drawers. Ouch - now that sucked as we were not allowed to scatch our private parts except when in the presence of a corpsman. I always found that strange, but then the corpsmen were squids. Go figure.

Just about 48 days until I leave for PI.

Previous recruits have noted that shaving all body hair dimnishes the ability of sand fleas to latch onto the human body - in particular the nether regions. If one is prone to infections due to sand flea bites, this might be an option for a recruit with this problem.

22 years ago we used Skin So Soft but they made us quit using it because it doesn't let you sweat the way you should so your body will cool down - it DID keep them damned sandfleas off of you though.

The Husband used to mix Skin So Soft w/Aqua Velva and rubbing alchohol. The sandfleas either keep away from you or die on contact.

I leave Sept 4, 2006 . . anyone know what the weather is like @ Paris Island that time of year ?
I think the reference is saltpeter. It's used to make gunpowder, and is put in the food at Recruit Training in order to suppress sex drive(meaning no erections getting in the way).

Make it through boot camp first - tho there may be others who chime in. Becoming a Marine is job one.

Good attittude! You will do well. It will be unnerving at first, but if it were not, you would be disappointed!!! Am I wrong?
Kudos -
You are right. I would be very dissapointed. I am from California.......yeah, the east coast during the hottest month til the coldest months is going to not be too fun. lol. But like you said, i would not have it any other way. i would rather have a hard time and know that i have earned it than feeling like it was not as hard. Not that i think that is an option. lol. i hope you understand what i mean. But yes, even through all this i still can not wait to have my chance to become a United States Marine.
Thanks for the kudos!

You'll be easy for me to remember K8 - 28 Aug is my birthday. And don't listen to Steve telling you to shave everything before you go - the itch from THAT growing back will be worse than any little sand flea bite you'll get.
PI will still be hot and muggy about then - it will be cooling off some by the time you graduate but not cold. Coming from CA though you may think it's cold.
I took a friend of mine home with me on leave once - she was from Newport Beach - we were in school together in Millington. She fell asleep in the back seat on the way and didn't wake up til we pulled off the freeway in SC. She woke up asking why I had her in the "forrest" - I just laughed. When I saw CA for myself I know why she asked that - there are no woods in CA, at least not anywhere I saw.
Good luck in bootcamp - it will be the best thing you'll EVER do for yourself in your life.

Shaving??? Shissssh! Sounds you speak from experience Marine84! I think we need delve into this further, but we can go into private chat for that - ooooh yeah! LOL!!!
It could be cooling for your final PFT. Regardless - you will do well. All the other recruits in your platoon and series will be going through the same weather conditions. Hell I didn't even know what a Guide or an Honor Guard even was when I joined the Corps! You are waaaaay ahead of the curve!

Yeah CA has forrests and mountains and stuff but it all depends where you live. You can live in the country were all you see are foothills. lol. I live on the coast so there is ocean and forresty areas lol. But i think you are right that it will probably seem cooler to me since i am use to the CA sunshine. lol
Thanks for the advice Marine84! I really appreciate it. I am so excited to leave i can hardly stand it. And just in case i forget.....Happy Birthday. lol. Hopefully it will bring me good luck.

I think she'll do well too - she's the first poolee that I've talked to that hasn't tried to delay her ship date, pitch a coniption about MOS or anything - that attitude "I don't really have a choice" is what will get you through. You already understand that you have signed your life away to take a ride on the big yellow bus called the Marine Corps - it's up to you as to how much fun the ride will be. The Marine Corps pays you to think on your feet in just about any situation and all you have to do is shut your mouth, listen and pay attention to what is being told to you throughout your training - they don't pay you to have fun - they don't really care.
OK.............Recruiter??? Where's my Meritorious Mast?

My bad - I mixed threads. Was talking to PFTPoolie - a guy!
That being said, a guy going to Boot shaved at my suggestion, now that would be priceless!!!
