Marines helping Marines

MARINE CORPS BASE QUANTICO, Va.(Feb. 23, 2006) -- The Marine Executive Association held its monthly luncheon to assist transitioning Marines by providing them an avenue to meet and greet Marine friendly business owners, job recruiters and employers at The Clubs At Quantico Friday.
At the luncheon, transitioning Marines had the opportunity to exchange resumes, set up interviews, and receive information on resume preparation, said Tim Murphy, MEA treasurer.
Fourteen employers gathered a brief job experience from the 44 transitioning Marines in attendance.
“We have these luncheons at Quantico every other month, and when we are not at Quantico, we are at Henderson Hall (in Arlington),” Murphy said. “The luncheon is a positive example of Marines helping Marines.”
At each luncheon, MEA has a guest speaker. This month’s speaker was Dee Thomas, Quantico’s Transition Assistance Program manager. She spoke about the importance of getting started and prepared to transition out the military as early as possible and to start network.
“Networking, networking, networking!” she stressed to the luncheon participants. “MEA is a good way to network and hear others’ true stories. It really helps you out.”
Thomas said that transitioning Marines, sailors and their family members come through the TAP office all the time to seek guidance.
“Our business is to help our Marines and sailors to make a smooth transition,” she added.
According to Thomas, one must start early to identify skills, job desires, and to try to link up with experienced individuals that can assist in job searching.
MEA is a networking organization with members who work to inform and advise by providing Marines with connections to job placement agencies and search methods to support a successful transition from the military or moving from one civilian position to another.
In addition to networking, the non-profit organization of Marines also provides Marines with mentoring, marketplace information and interaction with MEA members at transition panels.
