Heard from a gentleman in France wondering why his Pic looked different from the Rosenthal Pic--long story short--the Pic is from the 1949, John Wayne film,, Sands of Iwo Jima. They had re-created the flag raising (replacement flag, not the actual flag raising) scene for the movie, and this is a photo of that.

Several of the original Marines involved w/the flagraising were in the film, including Hayes and lt Schrier, also w/speaking parts were Cols. Shoup and jim Crow.
