CMC: Leaders will be evaluated on mentoring abilities
By John Hoellwarth
Times staff writer

Fitness reports and proficiency and conduct marks will now reflect a Marine’s ability to tutor his or her subordinates, according to a Corps-wide message from Marine Commandant Gen. Mike Hagee published Feb. 14.

The Marine Corps Mentoring Program will be broader in scope than job skills training or general Marine Corps knowledge and is intended to capitalize on the unit cohesion that the commandant wrote “has arguably never been stronger in our Corps.”

“The MCMP is intended to encompass all aspects of a Marine’s life,” states the order initiating the program.

Marines at all levels of leadership are directed to take personal responsibility for the conduct of their subordinates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, according to ALMAR 008/06.

Through the message, Hagee tasked commanders to implement the mentorship program within their units and to begin taking mentorship performance into consideration when writing regular performance evaluations.
