3,000 Sailors, Marines Set To Return To San Diego
KGTV TheSanDiegoChannel.

More than 3,000 sailors and Marines with Expeditionary Strike Group One will return home to San Diego today aboard three warships after a seven-month deployment in support of the war on terrorism.

The amphibious assault ship Tarawa, transport dock Cleveland and dock landing ship Pearl Harbor, along with an attachment of Marines from the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit, will arrive at Naval Station San Diego.

While deployed, the ships conducted maritime security operations, took part in training exercises with the Iraqi Navy in the Persian Gulf and protected key oil terminals in the region, according to Third Fleet public affairs.

After the earthquake in Pakistan last October, the Cleveland and Pearl Harbor also ferried several hundred tons of relief supplies from international organizations for distribution by the government.

Port visits were made in Bahrain, Jebel Ali, Singapore, Hong Kong, Australia, Greece and the United Arab Emirates.
