Hi bigdog43701,
It is good to hear from someone who was assign there. Was SOMS part of MAG-24 H&MS-24?

I'm always surprised (but happy) to hear someone use K-Bay in a sentence.
I was with MACS-2 from 87-90. We had the giant golf balls by Pyramid Rock. When I tell people where I was stationed they seem to have no understanding that there is a Marine base there.

I didn't work in Supply, but I was assigned to H&MS-24 Powerplants from 1980 to 1983. My name is Ron Nelson, but everybody called me "The Rat". I was a Corporal when I left in 1983. Perhaps you may know me, or remember anybody that worked in the Powerplants department. I've tried to find buddies now for several years, but have not yet been successful in locating anybody. Hi Ron,
No, I didn't know anyone from the Powerplant department there at K-Bay from the time I was there until the time I left. I just knew some marines who were assign to other squadrons but the majority of the time they were in and out of deployments.

Do you all know that has been 30 YEARS???!!! I was there from 77 to 81. It is really hard to imagine. I was with HAMS-24 Avionics in 620 for awhile then went to PC. HAMS had the two A-4 trainers as part of their inventory. I spent two WestPacs with HMM-165 on the USS Okinawa. If you were with AVI you 'have' to remember Patty Young! LOL! She was a Cpl, then Sgt. She married a sailor who flew P-3's. Wish I could find her!

One of the things I hated the most about that darned place was the PFT course. Right along the runway. Remember that second mile? To the runway, up the darned hill, then back down the hill full speed to try make up time? Its' been so long now that I can't remember as much as I might like. LOL!

I remember when I was at K-Bay, there were several aircraft units that tend to rotate in and out. There were the 3 VMFA squadrons 212, 232, and 235. There were 3 Helo units which I can remember only 2 of them, 165 and 265. Then the only helo units that was permanent was HMH-463. That was between '79-'83 when I was assign to H&MS - 24.

Some of the supply personnel that I knew ask to go to one of the a/c units to be able to visit some of the places that was on the unit schedule. One of the guys who I used to work along with ask to get on with VMFA - 212 and once on there, they were always busy getting everything ready for those inspections prior to deployment.

If there was anyone that were attached to VMFA - 212 between '79-'83, let me know for there was a guy who I have been trying to get in touch with and just to see how he has been doing through all these years.

I was at K-bay 1973-75, before going on Embassy
Duty. In April of 74, I was with A Co 3rd Shore Party, TAD to EOD as their radio operator. We went up in EW-27, a Huey Uh-1E, from H&MS-24, but crashed on range #5 North East of Pu Ewa. Anyone out there from my time?

:flag:Hi I am another onewire from hams24 77-80. aka was Boo Boo. I was avi and deployed with 212 in summer of 78 and didnot want to do a winter in Japland so asked, begged, groveled to go in the summer of 79 with 235...NO! was the answer. Till about 3 days out I suprisingly got orders to move my files from 212 to 235. Had one hell of a time in Iwakuni. Stationed with some read good dogs from VMFA-333. Amixed batch of us went to Tokyo and topped Mt. Fuji, and cought an allday massave rock & roll consert near a beach & park.

I was at K-Bay from '75-'79 Cryogenics section. We had the little white building next to the runway. Two unfortunate memories were both Hilo accidents. One next to the H&MS-24 hangar and one on the Big Island, Pohakuloa Training Area, where we had a crash that killed 7-8 marines. I flew back to Tripler on the helo that carried 2 surivors. I have often wondered and prayed that they survived. If anyone knows anything I would appreciate finding out.

NICE TO HEAR OF SOMEONE ELSE STATIONED AT MACS-2 "THE DUECE". I WAS IN THE MOTOR POOL FROM 1984-1987. ALWAYS REMEMBER THOSE GOLF BALLS. ALSO REMEMBER GETTING CAUGHT AT THE AIR STRIP GATE. SOME TIMES FOR A WHILE. K-BAY WAS A GOOD DUTY STATION. I HAD FUN FOR SURE.

I was assigned to H&MS-24 (Aviation Supply) from 82-86 but I deployed on WestPacs with HMM-265. I was also deployed to Okinawa at MCAS Futenma a few times with 265. K-Bay was awesome and the deployments were alot of work but evey young man should experience Olongapo PI!!!! I drove by K-Bay with my family on a vacation about 5 years ago. No more rows of Phrogs sitting outside the hangars. There were a couple of 53's and some P3's parked on the apron at the far end near hangar 105 but it still looked the same to me. Although I believe it is now designated as MCB Kaneohe Bay (Marine Corps Base). I have a ton of great memories from my time at K-Bay!

I have contact info for Falo. Not sure I recognize the other names on the list. Was Paco a shorter Texan who live to surf?

I was with NORS Section of (NMCS) Group Supply 77-80. Did a deployment with 265, 79-80 on the Trip. Lt. Col. Anthes was CO. Gunner Hannaford was there as well. Gil Hodges (I think) was the civilian tech rep.

Hi SlickJarhead,
The name of Falo sounds familiar. I believe he use to work in the SRS for HM&S-24 and if he is the one I am thinking of, he was a Sgt at the time I first meet him And I believe he was also a Samoan. As for Paco, I would have to ask couple of the guys who I am still in contact to see if they remember who was Paco. I don't remember no Texan who lived to surf. I remember we had 2 Gunners and one of the was Gunner Hannaford when I was there but the name of Gil Hodges does sounds familiar as well.

Yep, Falo is Samoan. Lives in the San Francisco area. Gunner (LtCol) Hannaford lives between Havelock and Hubert. I'm in the Fayetteville area.

Cool....That would be great if I could get in touch with him. I just hope he remembers me though.

I think I remember someone was telling me that LtCol Hannaford who was at K-Bay had been station at Cherry Point and lives in the area. But didn't have no other information.

I live here in Hubert but work over in Cherry Point myself.

Hi SlickJarhead,
Sorry for it has been a while since I last post but I was talking to one of the guys who I worked with back in K-Bay from '79 - '83 and we were talking about some of the guys we remember and I came up with couple of names that he hasn't heard in a long time. One of them was Falo and I had told him that I had gotten some information that he was living in the San Francisco area and ask me if I can find out exactly where Falo is living, we both can look him up. Now mind you I only knew him by Sgt. Falo and that is it. I don't remember his last name so that would be a problem so if you know his full name that would be great.

Now, as for Gunner (LtCol) Hannaford, do you know exactly where he is living so that I can see if I can get in touch with him? But if not I will see if I can but would be great just to nail it down closer.

There was a Gunny who was also there in K-Bay who went on and did 30 years and retire as a 1st Sgt at Cherry Point. I was told he retire sometime after 2003.

I forgot to ask about the guy who name was Paco but I will get on Facebook and ask couple of guys if they remember him. As soon as I find out, I will let you know.

Hope to hear from you.

Until then!
