Robert Hogue was standing two feet away from a Pentagon window, watching CNN's coverage of the World Trade Center attacks, at the moment a jetliner slammed into the floor below.

The blast threw Hogue, deputy counsel to the commandant of the U.S. Marine Corps, across the room. He escaped death largely because of the office's blast-resistant window.

"We used to joke about the size of the windows," Hogue said. "We don't anymore."

Hogue joined the Protecting People First Foundation on Thursday in recognizing the makers of the windows, including Solutia Inc., a St. Louis-based company.

The windows, each weighing upwards of 1,600 pounds and measuring about 1.5 inches thick, are built with a performance film sandwiched between two panes of glass. The film, designed by Solutia, makes the window practically shatter-proof.
