CAMP PENDLETON ---- On a balmy autumn Thursday night, families fought back tears and fears as they said goodbye to about 130 Marines and sailors who boarded buses for the first leg of a long trip to the uneasy Persian Gulf region.
The group, which includes some senior officers with the I Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Pendleton Marine Corps Base, was to leave early this morning on a military aircraft from March Air Reserve Base in Riverside County.
For many of the Marines, the deployment to a possible confrontation with Iraq is all about keeping their loved ones safe.
