Bucharest Daily News, Romania

The three hundred U.S. Marines, members on the destroyer ship USS Porter which arrived in Constanta harbor on Saturday morning were shocked by the arctic temperatures in the city and by the extreme cold.

Several members of the team are coming from California and never had to face such freezing weather.

The marines said they are anxious to visit the city and get to know as many residents as possible.

Commander in Chief Douglas Nashold, said that it is "extremely cold" and the members of his crew are not used to this type of weather.

He said that the ship sailed through the Mediterranean Sea where the weather was warmer and added that he has also been on duty in the Atlantic Ocean, but even there temperatures are not as low as in the Black Sea.

Nashold said he has visited Romania before, but now he is anxious to see the famous churches in the country.

The U.S. destroyer reached the Black Sea on the Romanian border and did exercises with the frigates "Regina Maria" and "Marasesti."

Its captain said that he is satisfied with the equipment and the infrastructure on the Romanian ships, but refused to say if there is any connection between the trainings of the marines and the military base at Mihail Kogalniceanu.

The program of the visit also includes meetings with Navy officials and joint trainings with the two Romanian frigates, comprising tactical maneuvers, traffic monitoring and human saving operations.

The team is made up of more than 300 marines, out of which 60 are women; they are to stay in Romania until February 15.
