Scattered Violence Leaves 4 Marines, 11 Iraqis Dead

BAGHDAD — Four U.S. Marines were killed by roadside bombings in western Iraq's volatile Al Anbar province, the military said today.
Three were killed Monday in Hit, 85 miles west of Baghdad, according to a military statement. They were assigned to the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit operating in the province with an Iraqi Army battalion.
The fourth, attached to the 2nd Marine Division, died from wounds caused by a bomb blast Sunday in an unspecified location within the province.
More than 2,250 U.S. military personnel have died since the Iraq war began in March 2003.
The Marines' deaths came a day after clashes around Iraq left at least 11 people dead.
In Basra, police killed a man who fired on a group of Shiites performing ceremonies in advance of the Ashura holiday and threw a grenade at police forces, said Capt. Mushtaq Khadim.
An Iraqi soldier killed a member of the radical Shiite cleric Muqtada Sadr's militia, which was guarding Shiites taking part in an Ashura procession in northwest Baghdad, said police Capt. Qassim Hussein.
Police found the bodies of two Sunni Arab brothers seized from their Baghdad home late Sunday by men claiming to be Interior Ministry commandos, said Lt. Maitham Abdul-Razzaq.
In the northern city of Kirkuk, an Iraqi policeman was killed and his brother, also a policeman, was wounded in an attack by men firing from a car, said police Capt. Firhad Talabani.
Gunmen also killed an Iraqi working as an interpreter for British troops based in Basra, police said.
Drive-by gunmen killed a retired teacher and wounded his son in south Baghdad, while a grocer, car dealer, former military intelligence official and a bystander were killed in three attacks in the western suburbs.
