A NAZI PHOTOSHOP SMEAR
By Michelle Malkin · January 31, 2006 07:37 AM

Power Line blows the whistle on the MSM's favorite whistleblower Coleen Rowley, who is running for Congress in Minnesota on a platform of advocating "ethical decision-making."

Her idea of ethical decision-making? Photoshopping an image of her GOP opponent, Rep. John Kline, as bumbling Nazi Col. Klink. Her campaign website replaced Rep. Kline's military uniform (he's a 25-year veteran of the Marine Corps) with Nazi-like garb. Power Line has the screen shot from Rowley's site.

Ed Morrissey dubs Rowley the "Godwin candidate" and reports:
Rowley later took the picture off the website but never issued an apology or even an acknowledgment that it had been posted. Fortunately, others did a screen grab of the site before the cowards at Rowley's headquarters went into full retreat. If Minnesota Democrats have any sense of honor and respect, they will call for the immediate withdrawal of Rowley from the race. She disgraces not just the Second District but all of Minnesota with this kind of campaigning.

Contrast Rowley's refusal to accept responsibility for her Nazi-card demagoguery with GOP Pennsylvania gubernatorial candidate Bill Scranton's immediate firing of his campaign manager last week for leveling a reckless slur against rival candidate Lynn Swann.

Hugh Hewitt asks:
Where are the Democrats who should be denouncing this? The ones who, rightly, slammed the comments directed at Congressman John Murtha's service?

A party in free fall cannot pause to summon the moral courage to denounce this repulsive comparison of Marines to Nazis? I guess Dick Durbin was just the first of many Democrats to come clean with their feelings.

Yes.

Minnesota Democrats Exposed was on the case early yesterday and writes:
This is unreal. Representative John Kline proudly served in the U.S. Marines for 25 years and to have his military service mocked by Rowley's campaign is unconscionable.

Rusty at The Jawa Report: Maybe, but at least he's a loveable Nazi

A reader received this e-mail for Rowley:

The image of Rep. Kline as Col. Klink posted on my blog was a mistake. I apologize to Rep. Kline, as well as any other offended person, for my poor judgment. These are critical times, and the people of MN's 2nd District deserve a campaign about ideas and substance, not doctored photos. For that reason, I will do everything in my power to ensure that type of material does not appear on my website again.

Sincerely,
Coleen Rowley

Another Imprudent Dem

As the Democratic Party continues its slide into disrepute, there doesn't seem to be any bottom in sight. Here is the latest smear from the Dems: candidate Coleen Rowley has published a despicable slander of my own Congressman and friend, John Kline, depicting him as a Nazi.

In a sane world, the pathetic Ms. Rowley would be forced to resign from the race in humiliation. That won't happen, however, as this kind of ridiculous smear is exactly what the Democratic Party is looking for in its candidates. The more outrageous, the better.

Here is Congressman Kline's response to Rowley's smear:
Dear Mrs. Rowley,

It has come to my attention that you have placed on your campaign website a doctored photo of me in which my military uniform has been replaced by a Nazi uniform. I demand that you immediately remove from your website that outrageous and disgusting insult to me, my family, and every man and woman who has ever worn a military uniform in defense of our country.

No one knows better than I the rough-and-tumble of a political campaign, but we owe it to the voters not to cross the line of civility, respect and common decency. With regard to each of these, you have clearly crossed the line by portraying me as a Nazi.

I demand a personal apology from you, as well as an apology to every veteran.

Your attempts to smear my good name and 25 years of honorable service in the United States Marine Corps by equating me to a Nazi shows a lack of perspective, a lack of seriousness, and a lack of good judgment. You should be ashamed of yourself.

Sincerely,

John Kline
Member of Congress - Minnesota's 2nd District.

Don't hold your breath. Far from being ashamed, my guess is that Rowley's Nazi slur will increase her fundraising from the Democratic faithful.

UPDATE: Rowley now says that she intends to apologize to Congressman Kline for depicting him as a Nazi on her campaign website. Interestingly, Rowley admits that she personally approved the use of the photoshopped picture of Kline. She says that "This was a Nazi uniform and I didn't grasp that impact," which is a little hard to fathom. If Rowley really doesn't understand the impact of depicting a Congressman and 25-year Marine Corps veteran in a Nazi uniform, she is not ready for prime time, to put it mildly. Rowley now says the photoshopped image was "in bad taste," but on her official site, rather than distancing herself from the outrageous photo, she writes: "I support this excellent blog written by one of our best volunteers!"
