Ostensibly, we 58 reporters from 31 news organizations are at Quantico Marine Base to "raise our comfort level" with the military -- and theirs with us -- prior to what seems like an inevitable war with Iraq. By learning about the ships and weapons and privations of military life, the Pentagon reasons, we will be better able to travel with a combat unit without slowing it down.
