WASHINGTON -- The Bush administration could decide by spring whether to continue or abandon the Marine Corps' troubled V-22 program, which was grounded after a fatal crash in North Carolina nearly two years ago, a senior official indicated Wednesday.

Undersecretary of Defense Pete Aldridge, the Pentagon's chief weapons buyer, said that new flight testing of the Osprey, which resumed in June, is going well. But Aldridge cautioned that the coming months will be critical in determining whether to move ahead with production of the aircraft, which flies like a plane but takes off and lands like a helicopter.

"We don't see any problems at this point in time," Aldridge told reporters. "However, we're just getting into the hard part of the test. ... The airplane's going to prove itself or not with the flight-test program."
