A Hampton Roads Marine received the Bronze Star for his part in helping to rescue Jessica Lynch.

Lynch was taken prisoner at the beginning of the Iraq War.

Lieutenant Colonel Rick Grabowski helped lead 1,200 marines March 23 to rescue Lynch and her unit.

"I don't see anything I did on 23rd of March. Nothing more than what we were expected to do as leaders," LCOL Grabawski commented during the ceremony.

His mission was to take two bridges in Nasariyah. The fight lasted for 17 hours.

"There's an unwritten rule, you leave no one behind."

A rule he lives by, and a dozen others are living by it now.

He has been promoted to Colonel, and pinned with the Bronze Star with Valor. He works at the joint warfighting center in Suffolk. His focus is to improve the technology of war.
