MIRAMAR MARINE CORPS AIR STATION ---- A Marine died early Tuesday of a gunshot wound in his barracks room, officials said Thursday.

Sgt. Francisco Aquino, 25, a member of the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, was pronounced dead at 8:32 a.m.

Marine officials provided no additional information on the shooting, saying only that it was under investigation by the Naval Criminal Investigative Service. An investigator at the San Diego County medical examiner's office said that, while it did have case, he was unable to provide additional information because the deceased was an active military member.

Aquino, of Hidalgo, N.M., was an automotive mechanic assigned to the Marine Air Control Squadron 1, Marine Air Control Group 38, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing. He joined the Marines on June 19, 2000.

Aquino was deployed twice in support of Operation Enduring Freedom from February to March 2003 and later for Operation Iraqi Freedom from March to June 2003.

His awards included the Presidential Unit Citation, the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and two awards of the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, a news release said.
