The two main missions of the Marines are to make Marines and win battles, according to Sgt. John Watts.

The starting point for these missions is the 13 weeks of boot camp training at Parris Island, S.C.

In addition to all of the discipline and mental training, recruits in boot camp also face many physical training exercises.

One of these exercises is the “pugil sticks,” padded sticks the size of an M-16 rifle issued to the Marines.

Dressed in protective padding and a football helmet, two recruits charge each other while screaming an intense war cry. The two combatants thrash at each other inside a ring practicing the “killing blows” taught by their drill instructor.
