Steve Gilmore had a good family, but a bad attitude.

Schooled on the mean streets of Arizona, he was defiant and rebellious as a teen-ager. He felt invincible, like no one knew better than he. Yet he was fortunate enough to recognize that he was falling toward the abyss — a high school dropout with no future.

“I was a street punk, an S.O.B.,” Gilmore says, treading the carpet in his living room. “I flunked every subject. I fought at the drop of a hat. I used to be one of these kids.”

Gilmore is talking about his kids, the children involved in his controversial Gung Ho intervention program. He wants to help them the way the Marines helped him. That’s why he gives his time for free, taking calls at all hours of the night, making home visits when kids have trouble.
