Following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, the Thunderbolts of Marine Fighter Attack Squadron-251 joined Navy Fighter Attack Squadrons-82 and -86, the Marauders and Sidewinders, aboard the nuclear aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.
The squadrons, all stationed at Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, flew off the 1,092-foot-long Naval carrier for six-hour bombing missions over Afghanistan.

This type of tactical integration between the Marine Corps and the Navy is something Marines and sailors could be seeing more of in the future.
