Herb Speer is 19 years old and leading the relatively soft life of a college undergrad. Next month, he'll lose the books and strap on boots as he reports for Marine recruit training at Parris Island, S.C.
Speer is filled with anticipation and dread.
Marine training is the toughest. Assuming he makes the cut, the next step could be fighting a war.
But if he makes the cut, if he acquits himself well in war, that would make him something special.
