BALAKOT Jan 13 : Over Eid holiday U.S. Embassy personnel and U.S. Marines from Shinkiari hospital experienced Pakistani culture and hospitality from earthquake victims.

The Americans visited Jaba refugee camp in Balakot, Pakistan where they set-up a new U.S.-Pakistan Community Center and learned how to play cricket from the children living in the camp. U.S. Ambassador Ryan C. Crocker donated five sewing machines to the new community center as a personal Eid gift.

A building constructed by the U.S. Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (“Seabees”) was used for the new U.S.-Pakistan Community Center. The women and children came together to paint murals inside and outside of the building, while the young boys taught U.S. Marines how to play cricket in a field nearby. The festivities created quite a stir in Jaba camp on the eve of Eid holiday.

Ambassador Ryan C. Crocker donated five sewing machines to the new community center as a personal Eid gift. The purpose is to start a women’s sewing group, “We hope this center provides a safe venue for women to pursue activities and learn trades that will strengthen their livelihoods,” said a U.S. official. The U.S. Marines from Shinkiari Hospital also donated small radios to the community center and to some families in the refugee camp.

Relief is the only the first phase of U.S. earthquake-assistance. As relief efforts continue, the U.S. will continue to provide reconstruction assistance focused on health, education, and workforce recovery.
