MARINE CORPS AIR GROUND COMBAT CENTER TWENTYNINE PALMS, Calif.(Jan. 13, 2006) -- Behind the scenes of a Marine’s success are the institutes that educate him and the courses that prepare him become a better and more knowledgeable Marine.

However, some Marines find themselves stuck in a rut when lack of access to such institutes impedes his goals. Some Marines lack the facilities or technology to take online college courses, order or take Marine Corps Institute courses, learn Microsoft Office software or even enroll in any educational course.

The Combat Center is well aware of the needs of computer technology and the facilities that can help Marines or Sailors, both junior and senior, advance themselves in education and training. The Learning Resource Center is the product of such advancements in computer technology for education in the Marine Corps today.

The center is mainly used to order MCI courses and, moreover, to take online MCI courses, said Jay W. Nelson, LRC senior network analyst.

“We are very familiar with the requirements of promotions in the Marine Corps and even with advancing in education,” said Nelson. “Here we offer the basics of picking up those stripes. The technology MCIs offer of taking online courses is found to be easier and more convenient for the average, busy Marine.”

Marines or Sail-ors who do not have access to computers at work or at home are able to use the LRC as a source for ordering or taking MCIs.

“Some Marines spend a few hours a day or a weekend knocking out MCIs,” said Nelson. “They find it easier to just come in, look at the course material right in front of them, take the practice test, and take the final test with me proctoring them. It’s a great center for career Marines, junior or senior, or for Marines who are looking to get out and want to take into account all their college credits and MCI credits.”

The LRC is not only just for MCIs and online courses, said Donavan C. Miskell, video teleconference technician. The center is equipped with a conference room that can be video transmitted to almost all Marine Corps bases.

“The teleconference room is another convenience technology has brought to the Marine Corps,” said Miskell. “Units and their commanders can communicate face-to-face through a television screen so that they can also show diagrams, maps, charts or whatever else information that needs to be transmitted as well. It saves the unit money by not having to travel around the globe to different bases.”

Aside from education and teleconferencing, the center offers their computers for Marines and Sailors to book flights, hotels or any type of reservations they need. Their computers can also be used for Internet surfing with certain restrictions, said Nelson.

“Marines can come in and use the Internet or any type of Microsoft application for free,” said Nelson. The employees of the LRC are knowledgeable with the center’s technology and are eager to help the needs of the Marines who come seeking help.

“We encourage all service members on the base to come in and use the resources they have here,” expressed Nelson. “Not too many people know about the center. It is here for them and we are trying to get the word out that advancing their education or preparing themselves for their futures through online courses can be easily done here.”
