Marines take poll for new dress blue coat

CAMP FOSTER (Dec 22, 2005) -- Marine Corps Systems Command recently requested feedback from female Marines on the proposed female dress blue coat with mandarin collar.

The proposed uniform is similar to the male dress blue coat. The enlisted coat has the same leatherneck-style collar and red piping along the shoulders. However, the uniform isn't exactly the same. The proposed coat does not include the white belt, upper breast pockets or red piping on the sleeves.

The female officer's coat is also similar to the male officer coat with the leatherneck-style collar, but it will not include the black belt or upper breast pockets.
"The new uniform looks like a junior (Reserve Officers' Training Corps) uniform," said Gunnery Sgt. Aretha D. Grubbs, the inspector chief for the Base Inspectors Office. "The collar is not becoming of the female anatomy -_ females have smaller necks than males. The new coat doesn't lay as eloquently as the old one."

Command sergeants majors were asked by Marine Corps Systems Command to survey their unit's female Marines on the dress blue initiative. The Marines voted for one of three choices: the adoption of the proposed coat as a replacement for the current uniform and to phase out the current uniform; or adoption and allowing the continued wear of the current uniform until unserviceable; or disapproval of the adoption.

"Ninety percent of the females (with Marine Corps Bases Japan) voted against the new uniform," said Sgt. Maj. Robert E. Mastriano, the sergeant major of MCBJ. "The new uniform does not take into consideration the female body."

The uniform board at Headquarters Marine Corps evaluates different proposed ideas, solicits feedback from commands and presents the information to the Commandant of the Marine Corps when deciding on a new uniform, according to Mastriano. The final decision is up to the Commandant.
