Frustrated family seeks details of son’s shooting

A Marine in Iraq was shot in the back of the head and killed while sleeping in his barracks in Fallujah, Iraq, his family said Tuesday. The Pentagon said only that the Marine died of a “nonhostile” gunshot wound.
Cpl. Adam R. Fales was assigned to Combat Service Support Detachment-21, 2nd Marine Logistics Group, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, N.C.
The mother of Fales, 21, of Cullman, Ala., said she was frustrated in her attempts to learn more about the circumstances of Friday’s shooting in Fallujah, and to bring his body home soon.
“The Marines came out to my house Saturday morning and told me my son was shot in the back of his head in his secure barracks,” Glenda Fales said Tuesday in a telephone interview. “They said it was under investigation and they won’t tell us anything else. We don’t know if it was accidental or if somebody shot him on purpose.”
The Defense Department confirmed that the Marine from Alabama was killed by a “nonhostile” gunshot in Iraq, but said the death remains under investigation.
Glenda Fales said that her son’s body had been at the military mortuary in Delaware since Sunday and that the Marines had not confirmed when they will release it for burial.
Later Tuesday, Staff Sgt. Amy Contreras, a spokeswoman at the Marine Corps Air Station at Cherry Point, N.C., said members of Fales’ unit would escort his body to Alabama on Wednesday.
Contreras declined to comment on Fales’ death, saying, “We don’t have the full story yet.”
Fales had been set to go home in February.
