As I understand, the Marines used to wear a leather belt on their dress uniform (greens) during and thru WWII?? I thought the reason that they got rid of the Leather Belt and the "Big Buckle" was that Marines back then would sharpen the inside of the Buckle - "razor sharp", then if they got into a fight, they would put the buckle between the thumb & forefinger, wrap the belt around their hand and "presto" - one bad piece of flesh eating machinery was born!!! You'll have to admit - and I mean "all of you", that that leather belt was extremely attractive with the uniform. Was this the reason for getting rid of the belt? Or was it a matter of economics " cloth was more affordable"?? I never noticed if some officers were still entitled to wear the leather belts with their uniforms? I remember some of the "old salts" talking about this - years ago, but they just mentioned the fighting and not the mystery of the belt history itself??
