WASHINGTON, D.C. -- As the latest two ex-Marines to win seats in the U.S. House, Minnesota's John Kline and South Dakota Gov. Bill Janklow were tickled Monday by the reception they got upon arriving in the nation's capital.

A Marine Corps captain greeted the two victorious Republicans, picked up their luggage and escorted them to their hotel.

Kline, accompanied by his wife, Vicky, said Janklow was aboard their flight to Washington for this week's freshman orientation program.

"It was nice to be met and treated a little bit special," said Kline, who defeated Democratic Rep. Bill Luther last week. "It's been a pretty exciting day."

At the hotel, the freshmen were greeted by Rep. Bob Ney, R-Ohio, chairman of the House Administration Committee, who is overseeing the orientation.

Kline said that the new arrivals were issued cell phones, portable personal computers to send e-mails and "a big pile of invitations to events" -- including dinners Monday and Tuesday nights hosted successively by House GOP Whip Tom Delay of Texas and House Speaker Dennis Hastert, R-Ill.

Kline, a retired Marine colonel, said he already has made known his wishes to serve on the Armed Services and Transportation committees, but it'll be awhile before he finds out how he fares.
