An Okinawa-based Marine — one of four injured in a truck rollover that killed a fellow Marine during training Sunday at Camp Fuji — remained in stable condition at U.S. Naval Hospital Yokosuka on Wednesday afternoon, a hospital official said.

Pfc. Michael Robinson, of the 3rd Transportation Support Battalion, was injured along with Pfc. Moises Cazeras, Pfc. Andrew W. Stolberg and Lance Cpl. Troy Marinos. The latter three were released from the hospital Tuesday.

Cpl. David W. Smith, 20, was pronounced dead at the Yokosuka hospital after the accident Sunday at the training area beneath Mount Fuji near Tokyo.

A hospital official Wednesday declined to release the cause of Smith’s death or the extent of Robinson’s injuries.

Media queries were referred several hundred miles away to U.S. Naval Hospital Okinawa, which did not treat any of the injured Marines.

On Wednesday, Marines provided few new details regarding the circumstances of the accident.

The 7-ton truck that overturned was towing another 7-ton truck through the 22,000-acre East Fuji Training Area, the larger of the two training areas at Camp Fuji. The Marines were training in a convoy security operation exercise, a Marine spokesman said.

It was not snowing at the time, the spokesman said.

Saying the accident was still under investigation, the Marine Corps declined to provide additional details on how the truck overturned, the status of the two trucks or if anyone was in the second truck being towed.

Also unknown was when the training exercise resumed after the accident occurred or whether any safety precautions were taken following the accident.

An attempt to reach the 3rd Transportation Support Battalion on Wednesday afternoon for comment was unsuccessful.
