DOWNINGTOWN, Pa. -- Students at two Chester County elementary schools have a front row seat for the historic election in Iraq, courtesy of a gym teacher serving in the U.S. Marines.

Lt. Col. Craig Evans has been in Iraq for months, but he has kept in touch with students and staff at the Pickering Valley Elementary School in Chester Springs and at West Bradford Elementary in Downingtown.

West Bradford principal Bob Clegg says Evans sent back ballots and other items from October's voting, in which he helped provide transportation and security. And lately, he's been keeping them up to date with e-mails and digital photos.

Clegg says students get a little something out of it now, and he's hoping that in the future "it will reinforce for them the historical importance of what they're experiencing today."

Clegg expects Evans to lay down his gun and pick up his whistle once again in mid-2006.
