Left Right your Left
Lefty Right your Left
Lefty Right your Left.
I left the sky in the middle of the night
I hit the deck and I'm ready to fight.
A grease gun and Kabar by my side
These are the tools that make men die.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hail, hail, infantry
Queen of battles, follow me
Marine Corps life is the life for me
Cause nothing in this life is free.
Here I lie in this foreign land
Bleeding on this foreign sand
Ground around me turning red
By the time they find me, I'll be dead.

Hail, hail, infantry
Queen of battles, follow me
Marine Corps life is the life for me
Cause nothing in this life is free.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the middle of the night in the drizzle and rain,
I packed my chute and I ran to the plane.
Mission top secret there's a mission unknown,
We don't know if we're ever comin' home.
Stand up buckled up shuffled to the door,
Jumped right out and shout MARINE CORPS!
If my chute don't open wide.
I've got another one by my side.
If that chute don't open round.
I'll be the first one on the ground.
Orraaahhh!
Blood and Guts
Orraaahhh!
Thats all right
Blood and Guts
Every where
Orraaahhh!

Tell my mama not to cry
In the Marine Corps you will do or die.
Pin my wings upon my chest
Tell my girl I've done my best.
Place a Kabar in my hand.
I'll fight my way to the promised land.
Orraaahhh!
Blood and Guts
Everywhere
That's us
That's us
Lean and mean
US Marine
Orraaahhh!
Orraaahhh!

Belleau Wood Memorial Ceremony

Date: 000528

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It's difficult to imagine that this beautiful and tranquil setting was the backdrop for one of the bloodiest battles in the history of the United States Marine Corps. The forsythia, laurel, boxwoods, and other plants and vegetation that adorn this site, graciously add to its serenity. But they do not give the slightest hint as to the intensity of the fighting that took place here in June 1918. Nor do they reveal the critical strategic implications of winning that battle. However, the winds that blow past these silent woods and the adjoining wheat fields do whisper a vivid story. The story tells of the thunderous artillery barrages that drowned out the incessant machine-gun fire. It speaks of the crackling rifles that were eventually muted by the relative silence of hand-to-hand combat. It tells us of that first day of action in which the Marine Corps suffered more casualties than it had lost in its entire history. ...And it relates the reason for which men endured these travails: so that the people of F
rance could live in freedom.

So today we gather - as we have every year - to let the gentle winds betray the beauty of the shrubbery. To let them narrate the story of the courage and actions of the more than 2,200 Americans who gave their lives here in the defense of liberty. But why are we interested in their story? Why should we gather and hold these ceremonies? Intuitively one would say that it is because their actions were commendable and deserve our admiration. But plainly it is because we must ensure that the extraordinary deeds of the men who fought and died here are never forgotten. We must see to it that their sacrifices are planted in our memories as deeply as the roots of the elms that line the avenue leading to the entrance gate. By doing so, we preserve their examples of selflessness and dedication. In turn, we hope that these examples may inspire future generations to meet their challenges with the gallantry of the men that we praise.

Although the grave markers remind us of the solemnity of this site, it is through these ceremonies and gatherings that we keep alive the memories of the thousands of brave young men who fought, and the 2,289 who rest here. Most of you know their story. And you know that it is one we must continue to retell.

It was here that the 4th Marine Brigade, as part of the larger 2d U.S. Army division, blunted an enemy advance. Historians tell us that had the penetration succeeded, the advance would have probably resulted in the fall of Paris and perhaps the French republic. But the brigade's two regiments, the 5th and 6th, comprised entirely of volunteers, showed their mettle under fire. The Marines proved to be an impenetrable force which, in the eyes of the enemy, was undaunted by the "moral effect" of their debilitating artillery. Regardless of the circumstances, the Marines refused to succumb.

Instead, the spirited young-men who faced the combat-hardened veterans of the Imperial Infantry eagerly attacked on June 6th. The chaotic conditions that the bursting artillery rounds and gas canisters created did not stop them. As the days passed and the fighting progressed, the deafening barrages gave way to exploding grenades and then to the sporadic popping of small-arms fire. The 4th Brigade had suffered heavily but had managed to batter elements of three German divisions that were rotated into the woods and around the neighboring villages. After a temporary relief from the front lines, the Marines returned to complete the expulsion of the remaining Germans. By June 26th, the Marines had captured Belleau Wood.

By the time the fighting was over, about 5,000 men lay dead and wounded. It was then that the gracious people of the nearby towns and villages came to aid the battle-weary Marines. They dressed wounds and comforted the dying. They did so with great care and compassion, as one would expect from a family member. These are the images, along with those of the chaotic front, that were emblazoned in the hearts and minds of those who fought here. As such, they are the images that will be forever remembered.

The battle of Belleau Wood also highlighted the importance of the genuine friendship between the people of the United States and the people of France. This is a friendship that began more than 225 years ago. I know that in the glorious history of the French republic that span of time is a mere blink of an eye. But for a country that was born in the 18th century, it is a relative eternity. We value your friendship and appreciate the fact that our shared experiences of yesteryear serve to strengthen our alliance today.

Americans recall, with great gratitude, the assistance that France provided our Nation during its struggle for independence. From today's proceedings, we see that the people of France are just as grateful for our assistance during their struggle to remain free.

The lessons of this battle - and the larger conflict - are not lost in the modernity of the 21st century. Since the Great War failed to be the "war to end all wars," we have learned to remain prepared. In doing so, we have championed the principal lesson of the 20th century: that freedom must be preserved through vigilance, strength, and the willingness to sacrifice. The dead of Belleau Wood lie in mute testimony to this hard fact. So as we recall and honor their sacrifice, we pledge ourselves to live up to the standard they set.

As our past is a window to our future, we must remain vigilant that we never forget the sacrifices made on this site eighty-two years ago. We must continue to honor our heroes not only with words, but also with actions. This observance is a fitting tribute to our men, and we thank the people of France for supporting it - and not forgetting them.

The words inscribed on the base of the Aisne-Marne American Memorial remind us that "time will not dim the glory of their deeds." We know this is true because ceremonies like this demonstrate that for as long as we live, their spirit will live in us. Semper Fidelis.

all this Motivation crappola seems to be a new corps thing--but maybe it has to do w/the fact that BM1956 (before McKeon) the only motivation needed was a DI's 8 1/2 EE in the right spot, which seemed to last a lifetime.

I don't know about the rest of you num nuts, but my methods worked when I was in.

Ya treat a cat like a dog, he acts like a dog. Ya treat him like a man, he acts like a man.

Ya train them. Them train them some more. They want promoted, ya tell them straight up how to get promoted and why they ain't there yet. If they got promotions comin', you shoulda done it already. If they gotta ask, someone's screwin' up somewhere.

When ya got them trained, don't "wait til they're ready." Give them the responsibility.

Don't look over their shoulder. Check on them to see if they need anything.

Make damn sure they know they can come to you if they got any kinda problem.

Ya don't spend all day on their ass when they screw up. Get in their face, tell 'em what they did to screw up, tell them how to fix it, and turn them lose.

When they done a good job. Tell them. Now. When the brass comes around askin' who did such a good job, tell 'em straight up who did it. Give yer people credit when they got it comin'.

When yer people been trained well and they keep comin' to you askin' questions about how it's supposed to be done. You probably screwed up somewhere. Get them straightened out and figure what you done wrong. Yer the responsible party here.

Make sure they get to sickbay when they gotta go. They ain't doin' ya much good if they ain't healthy!

Make sure they get some time off now and then. Make sure you get some down time now and then. ****tin' on yer people 'cause yer tired and grumpy don't help the mission a damn bit.

My people performed twice as well as others in the squadron. They performed better than any others in the same MOS on the west coast, and in all but a couple of units in the FMFPAC.

As a direct result our operational readiness was unequaled in the FMFPAC among CH-53 and CH-46 squadrons for more than three years.

When they worked, I worked. When I played, they played.

We worked hard, we partied hard.

Motivation.

It's kickin' their butt when they need it.

But it is a helluva lot more.

As a Marine in the civilian sector, I've been fired six times for becoming better at the job than the owner or manager of the business. I've been fired twice "for doing too good a job." On at least two of those jobs, I was not informed that they were in business only for the purpose of tax write offs. I made the mistake of making those businesses pay and grow.

Every company I've worked for prospered from my labors and my leadership. One increased gross profits by 380 % in less than two years. I know these principles work.

And fer folks who've been away from the Marine Corps, those cadences remind us of who we were. Who we yet are.

Marine By God

THE UNITED STATES
MARINE CORPS...

We were born in a Bomb Crater, Our Mother
was an M-16 & Our Father was the Devil.

Each moment that I live is an additional threat upon your life. I am a rough looking, roving soldier of the sea. I am cocky, self-centered, overbearing, and do not know the meaning of fear, for I am fear itself. I am a green amphibious monster, made of blood and guts, who arose from the sea, feasting on anti-Americans throughout the globe. Whenever it may arise, and when my time comes, I will die a glorious death on the battlefield, giving my life for Mom, the Corps, and the American Flag.

We stole the eagle from the Air Force, the anchor from the Navy, and the rope from the Army. On the 7th day, while God rested, we over-ran his perimeter and stole the globe, and we've been running the show ever since. We live like soldiers and talk like sailors and slap the Hell out of both of them. Soldier by day, lover by night, drunkard by choice,

MARINE BY GOD!!! OORAH!!!
