For the second straight year, Marines are marking their birthday with an underlying sense of uncertainty.

Many local units are preparing for overseas duty if President Bush orders forces into Iraq, a scenario that becomes more likely in the wake of Friday's passage of a resolution by the U.N. Security Council.

Top commanders, in their traditional birthday messages, praised Marines on Friday for their service and reminded them of their legacy, which stretches back 227 years.

In his message, Lt. Gen. Mike Hagee, who oversees all West Coast combat units, noted that the work of his units in training exercises and the war on terror in the past year "will serve us well in the year to come."
